TBH they're right, if you consider how badly they handled it, it really was way more successful than anyone could expect.

They just said that so people think it is SO good that they are going to buy it, but they're not, 'cause, you know, it's EA.

Regardless of how terrible the issues were surrounding Sim City and how they butchered various features, the game DID sell well. People keep buying it.

I would love them to fix all of the issues, most especially larger city sizes, and offline mode. If they did that, I would actually buy the game.

Financially, it was. In business, and not just for EA, that makes it a success. News flash guys, this is why you vote with your wallet not with your voice. You can bitch about the game all you want, if you still buy it (which most of the people complaining did) then as far as they are concerned it doesn't matter.

it thought it was a craptacular game.  There is just so much wrong with it-I died a little inside afterwards.  Who really wants to zoom in to follow a car around the entire city .... gawd, that's like an entire two blocks.  Overly difficult to the point of stupid and the whole thing stinks of paid DLC.  HEY, maybe EA will let us trade out games ... like steam

2 million units?

Weren't people calling Tomb Raider a failure because it sold "only" 3.5 million in the first month or something like that?

The EA staff must be high on something.

They made tons of money off of it. By the time the next one rolls around people will forget about the last release and buy the next one as well.

SimCity was a success. As far as EA is concerned, they didn't do anything wrong because they were financially rewarded for their new always-on tactics, and saw a marked decrease in piracy. SimCity only has 10/65 negative reviews on Metacritic due to them pulling the wool over the critics eyes before the release, and before it became apparent that the game was about as mechanically deep as a puddle in the desert. If we blindly reward bad behaviors, especially from companies that we already dislike, they'll just behave the same way time and time again. This happened with Diablo 3 as well. I know a few Diablo fans who were annoyed, some furious, by the online requirement, and every single one of them owns a copy of the game bought at full price. Diablo 3 is the third top selling PC game of all time, because people just simply bought it, they preordered it. They complained when it became apparent that it was going to be online only. They complained when the cash shop was announced. They sat in queues to play an online-only version of a singleplayer/LAN style game and they complained, but only after they gave away $60 to Blizzard before the game was even released. They were both a success, and games like these will continue to be made and will continue to be considered successful by the publishers so long as we refuse to put our money where our mouth is and take our business elsewhere when we're annoyed. As other posters have pointed out, we can scream and cry about everything we hate, but when we feed the attitudes of publishers like EA or Activision or Blizzard all we get in return is the same thing we rewarded them for before.

EA or any other entity in the entertainment industry is the demon that only exists because we feed it with our desire for what we think we want. It's not an oil company, where we need what it produces to make the world go 'round. We can very easily do without our SimCity and Diablo 3 and ME3 and watch EA and Activision-Blizzard crumble, but we just keep letting ourselves be milked, because we have some sort of nostalgic fondness for who the milkmaid was and not who she is now.
