I did something similarly stupid when I was 16-17. Cashed a cheque for a guy to do a favor. Got scammed out of a similar amount of money. We all do dumb stuff when we're young. It's how we learn.

 

Now I'm a cold-hearted jackass when people ask me for help.. I guess that's the world we live in.

Im the exact same way now :D . I got tired of helping people just to get told im wrong, or get stabbed in the back. It's like "hey buddy you came to me for help, i didn't HAVE to help you." But, it's unfortunately true. It's unbelievable how many people can screw you over, especially your closest friends, they will be the first to stab you in the back.

I imagine that's quite an effective scam as it's the kind of thing that doesn't leave you much time and makes you worry/panic, which is why you fell for something that if you had a few minutes to think about you'd have been like eh... recharge cards... really?

I hope you'll get your money back and I have a question: for such a delicate duty (jury) isn't there an official way of communication other than an untraced mail?  Like a letter which you have to sign to receive so they know you have got it? :o

Actually several people got scammed for $1000s. So I was lucky.

 

And this is the reason I don't pick up the phone unless it's a number I know. 

They called my dad who is old and got him worried. He did not want to get his son arrested for not telling him. So my dad told I had to call them. I told my dad from now on if anyone calls your house phone for me it is fraud. I never give out his phone because I don't live there.

 

Bah, that was just a $280 fee for a lesson in fraud... I am sure formal educational institutes charge more than that.

I called the court and they said certified mail is sent and if you don't reply then they send a plaintiff out to make sure you sign.

Yep, I work in an IT service store and we've had several instances of people (typically older people like you say) falling for scams (less elaborate though, usually the Indian virus people), the largest sum of stolen money I have come across in a story is £2750 which is around $4200. :(

 

It sucks; but it could've been much worse!

First off getting out of Jury Duty is so easy. I've never served and never will.....  My Dr office helps with that. Anxiety anyone?

 

And it's good being broke....no one can scam money off of me.

 

A few good tips... never answer phone, always let someone leave a message and if they want money don't call them back. If it's about anything court related, someone will come to your house. Then... don't answer door.
