Google keeps audio records of your 'OK Google' requests

This is one of things some Google users were surprised to discover on Monday, when Google launched its new "My Account" feature. The company is trying to give users a better idea -- and more control -- over what information it collects.


 


On its website, Google says these recordings help it better recognize your voice -- and more accurately accomplish tasks. If you're a Google account holder, you can find the collection of recordings in a section called "Voice and Audio Activity." The stored recordings can go back months, but it's not clear how long Google keeps these files. Users may delete the recordings. (Or you can keep them as mementos.)

 


This type of thing isn't entirely new. In 2013, the world learned that the Apple (AAPL, Tech30) voice dictation service, Siri, keeps user audio samples for two years. And the company says it reviews customer speech recordings to improve Siri, according to Apple's iOS license agreement. You might be surprised how well these speech recording services get to know you. When customers use Siri, Apple's servers remember previous requests (and combine contact names and stored songs) to better recognize your pronunciation and satisfy requests. In Apple's case, customers have the option to delete the data on the company's servers by resetting Siri and the dictation feature.

I personally already knew this. It doesn't effect me much since there's really not anything I've over searched with voice on Google that is personal. Regardless, I don't really know how to feel about them keeping these.

This would affect me if I could use the voice search on my watch. I find "OK Google" surprisingly hard to say, so I don't bother.

I don't really use google now, and the infomation can be somewhat useful.. It's just like google keeping a record of what you google.

At lunch, i said the word "Gabe Newell" and one of my friends though I said "Gay Nudes" somehow , while the rest heard what I said, so one of them got hold of my watch 3 mins later and tried searching up "ok google, Gabe Newell". It as well picked up "Gay Nudes"

 

He was blinded that day.

 

And now its stored.

I understand from a developers stand point why they would keep these for a short period of time to improve voice command software but keeping for an indeterminate amount of time ehh I don't know about that. Another reason I don't particularly like google(parent company).
