I haven't heard it being bad in a while.

It's a really good OS.

I love it. I love Windows 10 even more. If he's really upset about it i would just get him Windows 10 Tech Preview so he can try that.

Everyone was telling me how bad Windows 8 is so I avoided it.. later I installed it out of curiosity and I cant go back to Windows 7. Windows 8.1 is deffinitely better in my opinion. I dont even care about start as I always use key shortcuts but if you want start then just istall Start is back.

Fuck no. I personally find that it beats the living shit outta Windows 7 in every way. And having taskbars on every monitor and having different wallpapers on each monitor is AWESOME. My productivity was a lot higher with a taskbar on each monitor.

I really don't see what all the complaining is about. It took 2 minutes to set up windows 8.1 to boot directly to a desktop that looks just like windows 7. The only difference in design is the start menu and that just takes a little getting used to the tiles. I rarely use this though as I launch everything from shortcuts on my desktop.

Usually the people who claim that Windows 8 is garbage and don't want it on their systems are those who haven't ever even tried using Windows 8 on their systems as of late; therefore they just parrot what they hear and perpetuate the misconceptions.

Under the hood Windows 8 is great.  Above that hood it is designed for Tablet users who want to touch everything.  Not desktops.

Stick with windows 7 if you have it already, it is far more friendly to desktops and lacks the useless features such as Metro.

For the Best builds and Price lists here is a world where many points of the price have been predefined already for your convenience!

Heyyo,

Yeah it's completely fine meow.

For people complaining about the Start menu being gone? I just direct them to Classic Shell.

http://www.classicshell.net/

There ya go. It's free (they do accept donations for their good work as they deserve and I've donated as well) and works exactly as you would expect it to.

Otherwise? Just download and install Windows 10 Insider Preview. It works damn good (just don't use the Windows Update drivers for your GPU as they are beta test DirectX 12 drivers, just get them directly from AMD/NVIDIA) and has all the benefits of Windows 7 and 8.1 rolled into one sexy package. It's completely free to use and once Windows 10 releases? Just tell your friend to buy it and upgrade his Insider Preview test version to the full retail without losing any data. ;)

It's much faster, more optimized and has better support.

People that dislike it do because of an aesthetic feature, that you can absolutely change using a tool like StartisBack.

Yeah this. Personally I like the aesthetic

I've used it, but it was over the internet on a VM, so I cant speak for it's performance.

I did not like the layout or the look of it at all. Hideous.

Most of the negative feedback about Windows 8's release is the app-like start screen that replaced the iconic start menu.

And if you change something that everyone is used to, people get upset, as we have seen before.

Sooooooo I'd tell your friend to suck it up.

Put in the classic shell start menu and you're golden the thing runs great and has some features that Win 7 doesn't. I've grown to not mind the UI, though I use it less, it isn't half bad.

But it shouldn't matter with Win 10 coming out soon

In my opinion:

Windows 8 is one of the best Windows operating systems from a technical perspective. Programs seem to run efficiently and I have only seen one blue screen on my windows 8 machine and that was from a faulty ram stick. The task manager is much better than any other windows task manager and the windows error log continues to be a really useful resource for trouble shooting. It also will have support for Dx12 and has support for many other low level apis.

However it suffers from some of the worst ui decisions I've seen in a long time. Doing something as simple as putting in the windows 7 start menu and removing the new touch friendly interface (which does work brilliantly for surface type devices in my opinion) would have made for a much better user experience. Also it seems as if they hid some of the most important functionality (such as shutting down your computer or managing options in the control panel). It would have been better for them to develop a separate OS for tablets and desktops than the halfway point we got with Windows 8.

TLDR Brilliant under the hood. Horrible UI.
