It is a rare privilege to observe the rise of a new language.

Thomas Dimson, Software Engineer on the Instagram Data Team analyzed the emoji usage on Instagram.

In march 2015 40% of the text on Instagram contains emoji; in Finland over 60% in Tanzania only 10%

He also searched for emoji-english translations:

Desktop OSes have support.

 

Apple's OS X operating system supports emoji as of version 10.7 (Lion).[4] Microsoft added monochrome Unicode emoji coverage to the Segoe UI Symbol system font in Windows 8 and added color emoji in Windows 8.1 via the Segoe UI Emoji font.

Windows 8.1 preview ships with a colour font named Segoe UI Emoji, which contains colour emoji glyphs.

 

A colour glyph consists of a normal monochrome base glyph which will be used to render the glyph on non-colour font enabled applications and operating systems. Linked to the base glyph are one or more colour layer glyphs. Layer glyphs are assigned a single colour each, and are layered one on top of another to create a composite glyph which can be rendered in Windows 8.1 - in full colour.

I believe it is only the Segoe font that has support on Windows so support may vary depending on the application/font that is being used. What OS are you running? I'm running Windows 7 at work and using Firefox to view this thread and the Emoji in the thread title is displaying correctly even though I don't believe Windows 7 has support... Maybe Firefox has support? I'm not entirely sure how that works out exactly. It may also be the case that not every Emoji is supported.

 

Edit: Yep, just opened this thread on Google Chrome on my Windows 7 work PC and the thread title Emoji is just a rectangle. So Firefox must have some support built in. Although in Firefox the Emoji is just a black-outline, its not a full color representation.

Win 8.1 with the latest version of Chrome, Segoe UI Emoji does show up in Photoshop.

EDIT: The font does work in IE...

People saying its stupid, etc. you do realize it's just another form of emoticons. Not another language, just another way to express emotion more clearly than text. Would you rather have "I'm happy," or " :)"? People have been trying to create this with ASCII, so why not just use little images?
