Experiences with non-techies

Nah, I already got a 1.6GHz P4 PC with an unbranded 32MB RIVA TNT2 in my closet. Just need to figure out the sound and networking, and I should be good to go for retro gaming.

Yeah... we used to have one of those machines, actually. It wasn't great back then and it certainly wasn't great when I began there in 2008.

I can remember having this HP Pavilion desktop with a PIII 933MHz. Windows Me wasn't very stable on it (then again, that's just the Mistake Edition doing its thing) but when we upgraded it to Windows XP... it lasted us until 2006. Yeah, imagine using a 933MHz PIII with 128MB RAM in 2006.

I used a celeron machine with 512MB of RAM until about 2010. That was fantaaaastic. Youtube's HTML5 murdered it.

Eric S. Raymond used an E6600 from 2005 until 12/30/14 or open source software creation. Raw data computations in excess of 18GB each. Core 2 Duos still have tons of life left, my friend.

That PC I mentioned in that post has 512MB RAM. Rambus RDRAM, at that. Based on the last updates installed on the old OS, Windows XP (replaced it with 98 SE), it was retired after Halloween 2008.

Fanboys.  <_<

A while ago I was on about getting an AMD GPU, second hand 'cause I didn't have a lot of money at the time, and every time I mentioned it my friend would try to persuade me to get a nVidia one just for Shadowplay when I had explicitly stated I was using OBS to stream/record anyway, and I still don't see how it in any way affects him.

Yeah, embarrassing story, I got a PC a bit ago and for months I thought for some reason that despite having 8GB RAM the manufacturers had decided to install 32-bit Windows 8 on it, turns out for some reason the Java website gave me 32-bit Java and I never bothered to actually check it...

Its not even being a fanboy, its just being ignorant,

I would've beat the crap out of it since I hammered my old i5 650 and 6GB of RAM I used to have.. I now have 8GB and still think I need 16GB. That poor i5, pinned at 80-100% almost all day long.

My family is not the most advanced when it comes to really any kind of tech. The other day my sister wanted to watch TV but it was on the wrong input. She decided she needed to call me down from my room so it could change it from HDMI 2 to HDMI 1... I had to hit two buttons. Also the other day, my mom managed to move the task bar and enlarge it so it covered half the home page. She called for my help saying that the computer screen was broken, so I just moved the task bar back to normal and she thought that I must have done something amazing. Finally sometimes I will plug one of my HDMI cables into my old Xbox 360 instead of the cable box, when I do this my family doesn't understand why the TV won't work so I have to come save the day, again.

I've tried, she's 77, she can't remember much. Right now I'm helping her with Vista since she's never used it and only has experience with 8 and XP...

If you're wondering, she's using Vista since we're borrowing a laptop and she is in a nursing home right now due to breaking her ankle.

So today we had presentations in English and all of them were either prezis or powerpoints. Anyways one student was chosen to be in charge of changing the slides for the groups so that they could present their presentation at the front of the class so in light of that the teacher made a joke of how we all should be in debt to that student. I replied that "we [i mean my group] won't" to which she basically responds with a wtf expression since apparently NOBODY knows about remote control these days.

So I go up there and I'm controlling my laptop through a Bluetooth based remote control app on my phone and some people act somewhat surprised even though remote control has existed in various forms for decades now. (IR based controllers being the most common)

Furthermore we were recording the thesis of each group for future reference and I'm an individual that will use my technology to enhance my life as much as I possibly can so when I'm up there presenting with my group and everyone is writing down the thesis on paper. I'm pretty much just like "Just take a picture guys! You all have phones." Wish I had added 'it'd be a better use of your phone than taking all those stupid selfies and checking {insert stupid social app here} every X mins.' Their argument was based on "but that's lazy" As though they never use modern transportation to save themselves time while enhancing their lives even though that too could be considered "lazy"

Hey Guys!  I just got a new monitor, because this is my first time building a pc; so i finished putting the monitor together but im not sure how to set it up.  I use a BenQ XL2430T monitor, it comes with a Power Cord, USB Cable, and a DVI-D Dual Link Cable.  Can you please help?

Sorry, wrong section.  However the nice people over in peripherals should be happy to help!

My experience with the techies at my school was a 3.75 year uphill struggle that ended in me ragequitting year 11 from sheer frustration. unpassworded BIOS on every computer (We all know what that means: kali) extreme paranoia (One kid was expelled for charging his phone with the USB port on a computer) Their server ran Windows Server 2003 (in 2013 (and probably still does)) didn't know the difference between NTFS and FAT32 (Seriously, this one time they spent 4 hours wondering why they couldn't install windows on this one machine before I had to point out to them that it was formatted wrong) Symantec endpoint protection (and they wondered how people, including myself, kept sneaking trojans onto the computers and taking control of them remotely) no packet encryption such that I could have the entire staff's passwords in one lunchtime with a simple packet sniffer or a MITM program, etc etc the list is endless.

This is how I felt about them, and the feeling has not changed.

I'm sorry? expelled for charging his phone?! Well at least I can think of one place that kid and his family can shove that cable up into.....(Yes, it's exactly what you're thinking of)

Follow the topics you create using the "Follow" button in the top right corner!

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

Later on in the year they decided to let him come back after realizing how fucking stupid it was, but he was still officially expelled over it.
