Experiences with non-techies

not really non techie stuff. but my former it teacher did let us programm stuff on paper for the last 2 years without letting us on the computer only once. i mean, letting the students "scetch" their code on paper is not wrong, but just saying you are wrong do it right without giving us the chance to check whats wrong or letting us understand how the code works and letting us test whats wrong is just nonsense. what do you think about it?

for me the difference betwwen seeing it overpriced or seeing it underpowered is the difference between beeing a fanboy or a user

To me at least, overpriced means that a product is priced higher than it's worth. Underpowered means that it's less powerful than what it's price should warrant, that doesn't mean other features (keyboard, thinness, I/O, etc.) might make it worth buying.

Basically overpriced sorta means a product isn't worth buying, underpowered means that it's not as powerful as it should be, but it's not necessarily a bad product.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

to me:
overpriced: too much $ for too shit of a product (like shitty spec, shitty build, like paying $200 CAD for some MX red ripoffs logitech ..)

underpowered: not enough compute power for too much $

i say macs are overpriced because $1500 isn't worth for a dual core i5, a 1080p display, and subpar peripherals included.

planned obsolescence.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

not enough compute power for too much $ -> too much $ for the bad compute power

too much $ for a bad product

Your and DocSwag's argument makes more sense to me because the other person was talking about it being overpriced for the specs, not including anything else you could consider. So I see your guys' point.

A couple days ago my brother literally said that a 2GB graphics card is 2x the performance of a 1GB.  That a card with twice the graphics memory of another is twice as good.

2 and 1 being what he used as an example.  In his mind the same applies to 8GB 4GB and or any two numbers with one being twice the other.

I tried to tell him he was 100% wrong but he wouldn't believe me.

Tbh I don't know what all contributes to GPU performance but if there's one thing I've learned it's that VRAM is not the sole determine factor.

I think that was part of my problem.  I knew my brother was wrong but not how to explain *why* he is wrong.

Ok maybe let me help you on that. what determines the power of a graphics card is most often the GPU ( as in the actual GPU chip die on the graphics card itself) essentially, you can think of a Graphics Card as a secondary computer that is purpose build to handle floating point calculations and transformation matrices and other heavily parallelised tasks, it has it's own "CPU" (actually the GPU itself) and RAM (VRAM in this case).

But how can we use an analogy to illustrate this point? Well consider this. if you have a system with a Core 2 Duo E4700 with 8GB of DDR2 vs a system with an i7-7700K with only 4GB of DDR4 all other things being equal. Well surely in scenarios where we use less than 4GB of RAM the i7 will completely destroy the core 2 duo. Same concept. What VRAM size does affect is the resolution and detail setting that you can effectively use the card for before it starts to take a penalty to performance. In essence, the VRAM is there so that relevant information is quickly addressed and accessed by the GPU itself. much like RAM having excess does nothing for performance, but having insufficient will tank performance.

In essence, what happens when VRAM limit is exceeded is that the leftover information has to be cached in system RAM instead. Now system RAM will be slower because A-it is clocked slower that VRAM and B- that information has to travel a long way from System memory through all the various motherboard bus lanes and PCI-e lanes before reaching the GPU itself to be processed.

If you're interested, check out this video by gamers nexus, it should give you a better understanding on comparing GPU performance.

the last one is just retarded, had basically the same experience when picking highschools. at one that i visited we were shown their shitty IT lab and were told to set up the internet conection. all the info like IP adress and subnet mask were on the whiteboard and on a paper we got. took me like 10 seconds to do and they were like "I DONT BELIVE YOU DID THIS SO FAST SO YOU MUST BE CHEATING!!!" yes its definatly not because i manage my own home network myself and every time something IT breaks at home i have to fix it(though restarting the router solved almost everything lol)

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

It's interesting because in some aspects, I am an IT person at my workplace even though I work in Quality. The only time I can't help is when it goes beyond my account privileges, but otherwise, I know how the networking and software works. I normally fix my own problems rather than call down IT.

Jesus I can't believe some people ... was in the classified section of a Canadian forum, saw a post for a Strix RX 470.

Somehow this guy thinks his 470 is worth $350 (Canadian pesos) because he found an ebay auction where people (over)bid that same card to $425 CAD.

W T F !?!??!

For $350 CAD I can buy a brand new 8GB RX 580, WHY, JUST WHHYYYYYY would I pay that much for a USED RX 470?????
