Still not as bad as Flint :P

It's relatively okay here but there's the odd occurrence every now and then.

But not everyone has military training, right? You might know how to do that but does that mean we should just start handing out knives right?

Point to me in the thread where I said we should hand out knives. Because I'm not going further with this because of that asinine statement.

Yeah, I edited my thread. And no.

Edit: I'm trying to point out that maybe you should be a little more responsible and not encourage people to start carrying knives. I realised just too late that I probably credited you with too much intelligence.

No no no, don't get me wrong. I refuse to encourage people to carry knives just like that. My point is with everything that is considered a weapon, you should be heavily educated in all aspects of it.

I am okay with people carrying knives, I can understand why. We don't live in a 100% safe world and a knife can be the difference between you walking home yourself or showing up in a body bag.

BUT

You need to know the extremely fine line that you're allowed to use it. If you get in a fight, you can't cross that line. You aren't justified. If someone pulls a gun on you, do NOT pull your knife on them, you're asking for trouble and aren't justified. You're in a dangerous situation but nothing has been done to harm you. These kinds of things.

But if you ever do come in a situation where you might get killed and pull your knife, learn how the hell to use it. I can't tell you how many times I've pulled a knife out of my friend's hand because he doesn't know how to use one. It is ridiculously easy to disarm someone wielding a knife. There is a way to use and protect yourself with a knife and you need to know how, or you're going to end up harming yourself or someone else because of your stupidity.

No no no, don't get me wrong.

Dude, I understand where you're coming from but I just cannot advocate the carrying of knives.

There's a saying that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and I fully believe that, for instance, training someone in martial arts for self-defense is like giving someone a baseball bat and sending them into South Central L.A. thinking they're going to be able to handle themselves.

You're talking from the perspective of someone with military training and all of this might make perfect sense to you but for the most part these are civilians on this forum who are going to look up to you and take what you say really seriously, but they'll probably never have the training you have, so (it's my belief) that it's just going to encourage them to get into trouble. :0/

Edit: Ultimately it's up to you what you do but I would just really really encourage you to just  try and get people to put the weapons down. :0/

Edit: Also I should point out that I've not read any of this thread. I have no idea what you may have posted up to this point. :0/

I don't have it with me but at home my father has a knife that was taken from a German WW2 Prisoner. The knife was crafted in one of our POW camps. Its a beutiful thing that must have had god know's how many hours put into crafting it, but hey, have all the time in the world when in prison right?

Next time I go back home I'll get a picture if I remember and post it, but as I don't expect to be home in a while you guys will be in for a wait.

That's why I say the education is important. Yeah shitty situations exist, but even just having a knife is enough to deter someone from doing something. It's giving someone a chance, and I have nothing against it.

I guess it's just not the way I see it. If I was ever in a situation where I might actually need a knife to defend myself I'm sure as sh*t not going to let anyone know I've got one, so for me a knife as deterrent just doesn't even enter the equation (but I don't carry a knife and I never will; if I have my way I will never need to).

The best way to deal with that kind of situation is to think ahead and avoid it in the first place and I know that for some people that's easier said than done but I'm speaking in general terms and the average person on this forum probably isn't living in a war zone. :0/

Seriously, my entire mind set on this may as well have been ripped straight from this website. If you want to know how and what I think about this stuff, really just take a look at this...

Beyond that, I can't really say any more than this.

I don't mean loudly announcing that you're carrying something..

And you can only avoid so many situations, you just don't know what is going to happen when the wrong person shows up and isn't going to care what you say.

Nor did I say I was going to stop posting here, but there's no point in debating when two people are set in their ways. I'm not going to change my opinion and neither will you. We can bounce ideas off each other but that'd probably be about it.

Omg I want to see that.

Well when I was in high school, we used to play "Get Alex down".. and yeah.. nobody ever did, two of my friends did kung fu and were pretty high level... they would KILL me in a fight, but they could never wrestle me to the ground

anyway, if anybody was behind me I would just grab their arms and flip them off my back and over my head :D or  I would just pick people up and carry them off haha

I am not strong in my arms, I have genuinely lost in an arm wrestle with a less than 5 ft girl (a girly girl too)  but in my legs and back I am very strong

@GuruMeditiationError I should add, I think pepper spray is one of the best things out there and one of the best alternatives when it comes to self defense.

It's "not really needed" to have a firearm in the US but we have a lot of enthusiasts and sport shooters because it's not as long and tedious as a process.

Scissors. Let's bring up scissors.

We have this which fucks you up.

[snip]

And this for lopping heads off and is completely legal.

[snip]

Fuck knives, I'm bringing my garden shears in my back pocket.

Not to burst your bubble, but there are a lot of better alternatives to any tools from that manufacturer. Everything Fiskars makes is ridiculously overpriced compared to competition, yet the quality is identical to every other manufacturers' offerings (say for example here in a local store, a generic non-branded utility scissors were around 2€, while the cheapest scissors from Fiskars were starting from 13€, and they aren't really too different. Both will only break if you actually try to break them). It's just the brand name (if it even could be called that), that makes them pricey.

As for knives... I'll post pics when I get back home. And one more question: do swords count as knives too? I have one, but it's just a decoration sword made from some cheap Chinese stainless steel, but still... Doesn't cut a thing with that blunt edge, but I guess at most it could be used to cause blunt trauma (not exactly what Wakizashi swords were made for... The blade would either bend or shatter, even with modern higher quality steel)

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

I don't mean loudly announcing that you're carrying something..

Look...my belief is that knives, for the average person, are much much more trouble than they can ever be worth, and yes, you're not going to be able to change my mind on the matter. :0/

For everyone reading this thread, I highly recommend Meditations on Violence by Sgt Rory Miller, also Gavin DeBecker's The Gift of Fear and Other Servival Signals that Protect Us from Violence,  and I highly highly recommend having a good, deep read here...http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/

For me the fundamental issue is a person carrying such a thing is potentially delivering into the hands of someone already intent on harming them a tool that'll just better enable them to do just that. But, if I absolutely had to make a choice between the two then I would go with the pepper spray.
