so whats the point in gaming at 4k?

HmmR

the tittle says it all

so why would play at 4k in 30 to 20 fps (average guy with average money)when u can play at 144fps at 1080p?

i just want to know your opinion or all u guys just going because it has more pixels

Bragging rights mainly.

Most gamers will prefer 1080p / 1440p @ 144hz

Better image quality? Some people have the hardware to support gaming at those resolutions.

Some rigs can play 4k 60fps in most games at high settings

I personally think 1440p 60 or 144hz is the sweet spot, I have totally abandoned 1080p where possilble

Once you play with a high DPI monitor, you will think 1080p is pretty rubbish

It's got better image somehow (I don't know if it's just me), it's got clearer image and wider screen making it more convenient to game on (in my opinion). But it's damn pricey.... Personally I'd go with better refresh rates (144Hz) over resolution....

Depends on the screen size.

Smaller the screen, the higher the DPI would be. a 13" 1080p monitor will give similar quality when compared with a large, 4k screen.

4k on a 40" TV for movies is going to give a smaller quality increase, than it would on a large projected image, etc etc.

IT LOOKS GODDAMNED BEAUTIFUL.

If you have a TitanX, those things handle 4k like a champ.

There is a reason only rich people game at 4k, i dont know anyone who has an average gaming rig who games at 4k, thats just stupid.

Some people do other things at 4k then turn down their resolution when they want to game.

Because 1080p looks like shit directly compared to 4k, and games don't run at 20-30fps unless you only have like a 290 and want to run 4x MSAA ultra on Crysis 3...

4k with ultra textures and the rest of settings on low (achievable on just about every game with a 290 afaik) >>>> 1080p ultra in my opinion.

1440p 144Hz is also an option but I'm not paying nearly $1k for a monitor.

I have a 290 and 3570k which is probably a little above average for tech enthusiasts and I game at 4k, how is that stupid? @Sauron does as well

when you are able to play a game at 144fps in 1080p, you should be able to play at 40fps in 4K as well.

As of the why ... it just looks better.

I see no point in 4k gaming, you're just stressing out your graphics card.

I prefer 1080p / 1440p.

The point is that 4k at medium/high settings looks way better than 1080p at ultra. Tried both. And to get an enjoyable experience you don't even need to sell your car, my R9 290 handles it fine; besides you could get two and get very close to ultra, and it would be cheaper than buying, say, a 980.

Oh, and for coding it's Godsend. If you have the eyesight for it, that is.

I personally would just go 1440P 120/144hz

But I think that 4k will end up being many times more popular and way more options in the future, than 1440p ever did, so when I upgrade, I will probably end up with 4k.

I enjoy gaming at 4k more than I enjoy sex...that there is the real reason behind 4k gaming, to replace women for men and men for women.

Because who needs a relationship when I could be at home gaming at 4k.

The arguments against it make me chuckle.

I game on a 1280x1024 monitor, because it meant I could get a cheap video card but run games with high detail turned on. It would have been the same discussion back when my monitors were "new" or a next generation setup; bigger, higher res, need more power to run them to look good, etc.

Funny how when new tech comes out, the same discussions take place. It's all for more money. Stuff gets made bigger/faster, marketing teams make you want it, they get your money. It's how the world goes round!!

one single 290? If you have multiple 290s then that would be above average. I mean people who have a 960 or a 280x who game at 4k @10fps

That is stupid.

The monitors and 4K Tv's should have 1080,1440P and 4K as standard settings. This way gamers can set their monitors for whatever resolution their graphics card and CPU can support.

Even with my 270 I quite enjoyed 4k with things like CS:GO, LoL, Arma, etc, it really depends on what games you play. Look at Linus' video for example, he played plenty of games at 4k 60fps with a R9 285, but if he tried to play DA:I for example that'd be a whole other story.

i found 1440p maxed out to be roughly equivalent to 2160p medium with no AA. that says a lot on how good games appear in 4k.

limitation for serious gamers with 4k is the DP v1.2 interconnect speed capped at 60Hz (so most 4k screens are 60Hz). action games at high fps and screen refresh rates allow for more accuracy and tracking of objects in motion. 60Hz and 60fps makes fast moving objects "harder to track and interact with i.e. shoot at"

Pixels = image quality.

People who own 1440p talk trash about 1080p and how big of a difference it is. For that reason 4K must look like a glory hole :)
