So I posted a comment on a YouTube video of a semi famous YouTuber saying:

"This guy got rich from CoD" (It's a Call of Duty channel and he posted a vlog of him on the Bahamas.)

Immediately I got replies saying "Omg ur just jealous xDDD"

And that got me thinking.. Yeah, I am kinda jealous of it. Who wouldn't want to make Call of Duty gaming videos for a pretty comfortable living?

And I admitted I may be a little jealous, but not hateful towards the creator. Some guy apparently took this way more serious and started trying to lecture me as to why jealousy is wrong.

He quoted Steve Jobs quite a bit and told me how it was wrong.

But isn't it good how you compare yourself to others to try to get better yourself?

If we dont look up to others and don't strive to do something equally good, wouldn't we just stay where we are?

I think jealousy is not entirely wrong.

What is your opinion on this?

Its impossible to prevent jealousy, it is a normal brain process in humans that cannot be avoided.

Telling yourself you are not jealous is not going to stop the subconscious thinking that happens inside your brain.

Saying it is wrong is like saying that being angry or sad is wrong. It's not. It's a part of life.

Jealousy is a natural reaction that all of us experience at some point in our lives.

Jealousy drives the economy?

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!
If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."

It isn't wrong itself, but the acts you could do because you are jealous can be wrong... And if somebody tells you that you are wrong, he must be perfect in that to get the fuck here and say that i am, otherwise fuck it :D

Maybe that's why you get jealous, so you have something to strive towards.

Nope... I don't like video edition.

I'll keep doing what I do

I do enjoy video editing and gaming a bit, so that's why I said that..

I thought most people felt the same way.

Jealously is kind of natural, we want what other's have, it can be a powerful motivator, but as with anything, too much is not good.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

I think pure jealousy is kinda wrong let me explain : if you're thinking that bastard is playing CoD as a living he doesn't deserve that he isn't even good at it without anything else yeah I think it's bad else if you're thinking waw this guy is playing CoD as a living I'm kinda jealous but well I didn't even try so how can I hate on I'm being succesful and me not. it's like being jealous of a friend winning loto if you don't even bough ticket for loto it's just hurting yourself but if you transform that into a neutral thing (ex: I don't buy loto ticket so I couldn't win good for him he bought it and win it's great) or a motivation (this guy win at loto and doesn't deserve that money I'll try to have more money by myself to at least earn what I have it's way better) but simply turning into a bad thing (he win loto it's not fair) is just hurting yourself and serve no purpose. So jealousy is good if you turn it into something positive else it's just something else to make you feel little and insignificant and this is bad

That's what I told him too, but he kept saying jealousy is wrong altogether.

I think jealousy is not entirely wrong.

What is your opinion on this?

My opinion is that those two sentences are not jealousy.

Let's do some Google Definitions:

jeal·ous

ˈjeləs

adjective

feeling or showing envy of someone or their achievements and advantages.

OK, what is Envy?

en·vy

ˈenvē

noun

a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck.

Well, that isn't good. Being resentful or discontented (unhappy with your station in life) is harmful to one's own happiness in life. But it's more than that, as envy can lead to other things.

So, I would say jealousy is wrong in action. Ultimately, I'd say it's wrong because it damages yourself.

Relevant.

Someone doesn't understand the kind of molding human minds can go through. The greatest influencer of it being our own thoughts.

TL;DR: Jealousy =/= Ambition. They are not the same thing. Jealousy implies taking it from someone else (You have it, and they don't.) Ambition implies you want the same thing they have, but as your own (without taking it).

That's a really complex question, encompassing multiple disciplines.

The short answer: sometimes you can't help being jealous, it's a reaction that (I believe) goes as deep as the autonomic nervous system. It's like someone lecturing you on being wrong for jumping at a shock or a loud noise.

How you act based on any given emotion is another matter...

It is possible to suppress emotions and feelings but the human brain is more complex than that. Telling yourself not to do something might prevent you from doing it, but there will always be a subconscious factor that you cannot control.

Some examples are the blink reflex, fight or flight, judging based on appearance, etc...
