Scientists at Large Hadron Collider look to prove "rainbow gravity" theory, disprove Big Bang.

DevilishBooster

EDIT 2: I am changing the title to something more appropriate because I found an even better article about it from yesterday.

Scientists at Cern could prove the controversial theory of ‘rainbow gravity’ which suggests that the universe stretches back into time infinitely, with no Big Bang

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/large-hadron-collider/11489442/Big-Bang-theory-could-be-debunked-by-Large-Hadron-Collider.html

EDIT: Apparently some people don't get how news agencies will use a sensationalistic headline in order to attract attention. They are not looking to open a Stargate or travel between dimensions, or even establish communications with people in another dimension. Here is a link provided by @HippY (thanks!) that will help you understand what they are aiming for.

ORIGINAL POST:

This is not a joke.

Now, it is important to note that they are not talking about "parallel universes" in the colloquial concept of divisional causality, where every single decision and action made by every single person/thing in the known universe causes a split in reality resulting in an exponentially infinite number of universes running in parallel with our own perception of reality/time.

"Normally, when people think of the multiverse, they think of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, where every possibility is actualised.

This cannot be tested and so it is philosophy and not science.

This is not what we mean by parallel universes. What we mean is real universes in extra dimensions."

Hold onto your hats, this could be a crazy ride!!

arent they just smashing atoms together, calm your tits

By "just smashing atoms together" in a very specific way, they are trying to create a micro-singularity. It's all been in the works for a long time.

Hmmm, this is the first thing I thought of. :D

"My name is Barry Allen, and I am the fastest man alive. When I was a child I saw my mother killed by something impossible, my father went to prison for her murder, then an accident made me the impossible. To the outside world I'm an ordinary forensic scientist, but secretly I use my speed to fight crime and find others like me, and one day, I'll find who killed my mother and get justice for my father. It is even possible that gravity from our own universe may ‘leak’ into this parallel universe, scientists at the LHC say.

O.o

Normally, when people think of the multiverse, they think of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, where every possibility is actualised.

That quote is wrong, Just because in multiverse theory with infinite possibility doesn't mean that every possibility will exist (some just cannot physically exist at all).

I remember a quote from somebody saying 'there are infinite numbers between 2-3 but 3 is not one of them' it really puts into perspective what could exist and what cannot.

Also people saying that the LHC will 'spell the end of the universe' are just uninformed crazy people. Sure ok it can create Black Holes but they will be one atom big and will evaporate in a matter of nanoseconds (not long enough to do anything).

There talking about other dimensions here. Quantum mechanics says that it is possible for certain particles to be present in multiple places at the same time which is obviously impossible. The best theory we have to explain this theory (yeah, its a theory about a theory) is that sub atomic particles are using extra dimensions which are invisible to us to move around in time and space allowing them to essentially time travel around so they can exist in multiple places at the same time. They're looking for evidence that sub atomic particles are moving around in extra dimensions here, they're not looking for a universe where JFK never got shot, elvis never died and micheal jackson was never born.

Thats true and not true, When we mean that a particle can exist in multiple places we are referring to the fact that its impossible to know the exact location of something and its momentum (uncertainty principle). You can only measure one or the other precisely.

Exactly, that's why I put that little qualifier before the quote. I think there are a lot of people that are going to read the headline (which I admit is a little sensationalist, but I didn't pick it so...) and they are going to jump to conclusions on what they are attempting.

No, I'm familiar with uncertainty principle. I'm talking about the theory that every sub atomic particle in the universe might actually be the same one time travelling around.

Quantum mechanics is enough to blow your brain up :)

Haven't they tried this before, and people were protesting against "mini black holes" that would consume the Earth?

Last time they were looking for the higgs bozon, they found it ages ago so now they've added more power to the LHC and set off in search of extra dimensions.

So are they looking for 13 like string theory?

Very interesting topic. Sad thing is that the further science goes, the more sci-fi it seems to religious people.

I'm not even remotely religious but hoping to create "micro black holes" and then detect them at a certain energy level (and if I kinda understand this correctly) to show that gravity is acting differently in an extra dimension which would allow for these micro black holes to form. Religion or no religion that seems pretty fucking Sci-Fi to me.

Which I suppose it is, because it's just a theory. Most likely nothing shows up.

I'm hoping they start to shed some light on dark matter / energy though.

I would think the opposite is the truth. Religion requires a lot of faith in the unknown, and standing firm in the face of uncertainty and doubt. It seems that the further science goes, the more faith is required to press on and follow through, even in the face of uncertainty or doubt.

that being said, I don't think anyone except the most imbred, backwoodsy types are going to see this as unbelievable hogwash.
