Worst Tech mistake you have ever made?

Mitch

Me building a gaming pc and only selecting cpu and gpu and ram  the rest of the parts being recommended by the shop keeper. Worst decision ever.  Well let just say the motherboard burned down in half an year and all my pc parts and money gone to dump. The shop keeper recommended me a bad psu and motherboard the motherboard did not even support my cpu. Me myself was an idiot to have not researched before buying those parts.

CPU: Fx 8350 | CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo Now  AMD STOCK CPU COOLER | Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 (rev 1.1)   NOW MSI 990FXA-GD80 | Ram: Corsair Vengence 8GB DDR3 Motherboard detects 7gb for some weird reason | Graphics Card: SAPPHIRE HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB GDDR5 |  HDD: 1 TB samsung

Spent £300 in Maplin for a 4.5 system revision and getting parts that either were incompatible with my MOBO or just made my system look like ass. Got rid of most of them last year, still left with a USB 3.0 card. That was for the machine i junked in 2016, wish id kept the MOBO as it was the same as what Linus used in the last SYW with Dimitri. If i knew what i knew now. Add that to the list of bad decisions.

Since 2004 i upgraded every two years, Intel/AMD/AMD/Intel/Intel, then i failed to upgrade for 6 years. Will probably upgrade later this year as I'm getting some hardware (HDDs) for my system 6.0 as I'm on 5.4 right now. I just need more cores, memory and HDD/SSD space natively on my main machine.

Intel i9 9900X | EVGA X299 Micro 2 | Asus GTX 1070 Strix Gaming 8GB | G.Skill 32GB DDR4 (4X8GB) 3200 | EVGA 280mm CLC

Seasonic 1300w Focus Gold | Samsung 500GB 970 EVO

WD Black 2TB/WD Black 1TB (X2)/Seagate 4TB Ironwolf/Crucial 1TB P1/Crucial MX500 500GB/Samsung 1TB QVO

Phanteks Entho Evolve MATX

Samsung LS29E790C 29 Inch Monitor | LG 24UD58 24 inch 4K UHD

Coolermaster Master Keys Pro RGB (Cherry MX Brown)

Logitech G700s

I too puffed a PC by switching from 230V to 120V. PC was not even mine.

Buying a PC with AIO for my CPU and never overclock on it before it fell apart from old age..

Buying the Logitech Pro for full price and never use it.. (too heavy, still have it tho)

Mounting a MOBO stand in the wrong hole (Define C) and then bolting it down and turning on the mobo before realizing it... Fucker still works fine tho.. kinda.

Oh and buying a NEC 30" screen (returned that boi quickly)

Well I just put a GTX 1080 Ti with a Pentium G4400 :P

Its not a mistake though, its a placeholder until I get my coffee lake upgrades.

Got loads more benchies left to do, so far the CPU runs at 42 degrees and the GPU maxes at 72, and people were telling me Id need more cooling for the GPU in my mini itx case lol.

Linus is my fetish.

  • 1 month later...

If you felt like you were having a dumb day I am here to make you feel better :P. I had mislabeled my drives for months and ended up having my downloads having there own raid 10 drive and my important stuff was on a raid 0 drive. Only just found this out. So enough your day knowing you have done nothing quite as silly as that

Effectively did this too

Join the Appleitionist cause! See spoiler below for answers to common questions that shouldn't be common!

Spoiler

Q: Do I have a virus?!
A: If you didn't click a sketchy email, haven't left your computer physically open to attack, haven't downloaded anything sketchy/free, know that your software hasn't been exploited in a new hack, then the answer is: probably not.

Q: What email/VPN should I use?
A: Proton mail and VPN are the best for email and VPNs respectively. (They're free in a good way)

Q: How can I stay anonymous on the (deep/dark) webzz???....

A: By learning how to de-anonymize everyone else; if you can do that, then you know what to do for yourself.

Q: What Linux distro is best for x y z?

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

Q: Why is my Linux giving me x y z error?

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

No, I didn't change anything because nothing looked wrong, but I still spent 15 minutes going over everything very carefully several times trying to figure it out.

Mine would have to been was when I was building my second pc.

I had bought the Master Case Pro 5 and the room I was working in was pretty dark and so all the stand offs for my mother board were in a black cardboard box in the bottom drive bay and I had looked for it for like an hour and so eventual I just gave up and found some other stand offs that didnt fit so i got a drill and a bit that was slightly smaller than the thread of the stand off. and drilled one hole and put in the stand off and then I put my hand down and noticed that the Fucking little box was right there right in front of me. I felt so stupid and today my mother board still one stand off missing(one of the middle ones and i put some rubber under it to stand it off the case after the fuck up.

I haven't really broken anything build wise and didn't have anything catastrophically catch fire, but I think the biggest and silliest tech mistake I made was when I was selling some parts last year. I have a few FX chips on my shelf in the plastic CPU packing and I usually keep them in the same order so I know which is which. The previous day I was cleaning them but it was late, I was tired so when I finished cleaning them I just put them back randomly and didn't bother putting them back right. Totally forgot about doing that the next day since I usually put things back properly so I never thought to reorganize them. Long story short, when I grabbed what I thought was the FX-4100 from the shelf, it wasn't and a lucky guy got an FX-4100 box with an FX-6300 in it. I cried for the rest of the week for being such a putz. xD

Many years back when I built a PC for a friend whos room is very humit. The PSU become unstable and the PC refuse to post. I bough another mb, and the cpu got killed shortly after that. And I go get another cpu to be killed again.

I feel bad everytime I saw them laying in my room with my old hardware.

Worst tech mistakes that I ever made are unplugging a 4 pin power connector on a graphics card while the system was running thus making sparks come out of the connector. (Somehow it survived) and buying my friends IPad mini.

Worst mistake I've made..  Well,  That's a long and deep subject :)

The best one that comes to mind was when I had to migrate for Commodore 64 to IBM-PC compatible.  It was all different and new to me, but the best part was the availability of porn from BBS's (if anyone here knows what those are)  I was 13 at the time and was quite fond of using hex editors to view files.  I quickly learned that executable files always started with "MZ"  Someone on a BBS sent me an encrypted porn image with a .BMP extension but I couldn't open it.  SO........   I went in it with the hex editor and saw that the first two characters were "MZ"  coincidentally as it turned out, I renamed the file extension to ".exe" and ran it.

The computer shut down and was unable to even post since it somehow corrupted the bios.  Lesson learned, Think of a better reason to tell dad why his computer won't boot OTHER than the truth :D

Suddenly, the good ole C64 became much more fun since I wasn't allowed to use the PC for a long while after

The worst mistake I made had to be not spending my entire lifes savings on a masterful pc. I would have been fine living in a carboard box as long as I have my gpu's to sleep with. Now that I think of it how would I get power. I could always go to Mcdonalds and get free wifi...... I think i'll do that. Thanks
