Just understand that this isn't something they are really interested in and just explain it to them.. You should not be a dick about it. Say something like those little papers you keep in a work map or something that stick out of the top, so you can access the page easy. It is kinda like that.

I would tell them it's for saving a page in a book so you can easily get back to that page.

I tell them what a bookmark is.

PS I never use bookmarks.

I actually only use bookmarks for pages that I need bookmarks for. To be more precise, if it's a specific page that's not google-able with a simple phrase and at the top of the search list, and it's also not a homepage of a regularly visited site, I'll bookmark it. Otherwise, I'll just type the first few letters into my address header (or into google) and be there quicker.

They have to know what favorites is for Internet Explorer. Just tell them Bookmarks is just FireFox or Google's name for favorites.

Explain it to them... Whats the point of this thread? Its really quite easy to explain.

Bookmarks are a way to keep track of long, or obscure URLs. If you tell your browser to "bookmark" a URL it will put it into a list, which you can then access by clicking here. You can also name the bookmark so you know exactly what each one is, or you can even organize them. For instance have a folder for all your recipes, or a folder for all your porn.... I mean research.....

Is it bad that my dream setup only costs a few thousand not counting the obutto?

I think they are people who probably only ever visit up to 10 websites, though are mostly just on some social website like facebook, twitter or tumblr.

Bookmarks are for users who actually do more on the internet than just socializing with others. I visit daily at least 50 websites for new content, be they news (at least 10 different news sites about different type of news), webcomics, podcasts, games and what not. There's just no way I can remember everything by heart. And even if I did, a simple middle click on a bookmark folder opens everything quickly and easily, no need to type each and every single website manually.

That said, it's important to have a browser that actually has proper bookmark support to begin with. Which no browser today has unless you use extensions, so that might explain why quite a few people don't use them.

Having a single bookmark toolbar at the top isn't good, it's awful and takes up vertical place for no reason. Having the bookmarks in a small, easy to miss button isn't good either.

Opera 12 had a great Sidebar, which you could click anywhere on the side of the screen to have your bookmarks (and emails, notes, RSS feed.. etc) pop up. It was perfect for quick and easy multitasking.

Firefox has the All-In-One Sidebar extension which tries to replicate most of those features, so I'm using that now since Opera went full ****** when they switched to Chromium.

Hopefully the new Vivaldi browser will be just as great as Opera 12 was for power users(already has sidebar AND mouse gestures, can't live without either of those). As it's made by the founder of Opera.

I said:  Mom, you don't need to go to google and search for YouTube or Facebok every time, just do this ( I show her how to bookmark sites) to get quickly on any site you want.

Now I need to show her that she can just make playlists in YouTube to access all the videos she wants,  because her bookmarks are filled with like 50 different youtube videos.

Mystery is the source of all true science.

Personally I have bookmarks that just sit there on my bar not being used, mostly because chrome fills in whatever I need really quickly anyway.  I think the only place I use bookmarks the most is to navigate to a specific subreddit from another site, because the autocorrect on Chrome always brings me to PCMR which is annoying if I want to go to like r/headphones or something

Does the knowledge of a bookmark mean so much that you started a thread?

I have him blocked for a reason - he shitposts so much. Don't even get me started on the "AMD sends me a free 7850k" as that just burns me. He's a liar and just annoying in general.

I had so much more to say once I read his profile, but I stepped away.

Bookmarks were originally used for physical books. They perform the same function on computers. Allowing you to go back to a spot where you were before without having to remember what 'page'' it was.
