I dont know if this is possible but there are alot of threads that have cancerous trolls that cause a ruckus in threads and it would be nice to have an option for the OP (Original Poster) to kick/ban people from his or her thread so they no longer can cause issues withing the OP's thread. I dont know, could be very useful, just a thought

probably end badly, just report the comment to the mods and they'll sort it out. Also this should probably go in forum suggestions or whatever the section is called.

That would just be abused, report the troll and the mods will do that anyway.

Sounds good, but i think that option will get ABUSED.

How about, a paid service, like for Bronze/Silver/Gold contributors

That sounds awful.

The mods are mods for a reason, and they usually do their job pretty well here as far as I've seen. No need to give normal users the option to discipline others.

Not gonna happen, probably not possible. Ask @colonel_mortis and in the future, there is a suggestions thread in the forum news and info section.

It's a great idea.  And it makes sense to allow the OP of the thread to have that ability.  I don't see anything wrong with it.  If the OP bans somebody, no big deal.  The banned person is probably not liked by the OP, so no big deal in either direction.  The banned person will quickly realize he is not liked by the OP and the next time he enters a thread of that OP he will either stay away from it, or be more considerate.

Furthermore, it allows the community to watch OP's in action, to see how they react / respond given the tiny little bit of power they have.

Good idea!

well on servers that you pay to get power the people with power just.... ruin life? they just ban who ever they want or destroy your house or kill you, and they just build stuff every were.

so paid for power is usually bad...

it can be like this the op can delete any unwanted reply from his thread . it will make mods and admins a bit free. your developer is capable to do that i'm sure that comment will get erased from thread but not data base so if every you wanna take any action the info will be available for authorities. and Thread reply ban will help alot less reports for you guys coz then no one will do the wrong thing when they know if i go off limits i'll be no longer able to post anything on this thread that way replies will be more precise.

Thats how marketing works, if you pay for a service, you deserve to get more perks

Haha, but we don't really get much perks to begin with other than some discounts on the LTT shop, which is dry and empty lol. Also access to other forum sections. The real motive is just to be a support to LMG, not really to get a service in return. I just wanna see the vids keep coming and help pay dem equipment etc. :P

But I get where you're coming from.

On another forum i frequented you could give a post/thread a dislike or a like, if something received too many dislikes it would get buried. Would be a nice way for the community here to bury those trolls/unhelpful types.

could be a solution, but LTT is/has beefed up on moderator positions, so being

freed up isn't a concern. we do like to see the community work with the forum

to do the actual thread removals. reasoning is that deleting information that

could be useful to others from a search or referral to help others with the same

concern or issue. self-removal defeats those premises.

Preamble

To encourage healthy and lively discussion on Linus Tech Tips forums we ask that each and every user read and abide by the forum Code of Conduct. Use of Linus Tech Tips Forum constitutes acceptance and agreement with the Code of Conduct. Please note that these rules can change over time at any given moment with notice available within 24 hours of alteration. The administration and moderation team reserve the right to terminate any and all accounts belonging to you if you are deemed in violation of any of the rules mentioned in this Code of Conduct or the User Agreement without prior notice. Our failure to enforce the rules shall not be construed as a waiver of our right to do so at any time. Decisions regarding the severity of an incident are at the sole discretion of the moderation team. The punishment for said incident is to be determined by the moderation team. The rules outlined below are only the minimum expectations of members, and not every issue can be predicted and addressed here, so conduct could still be considered out of line even if it isn't covered here specifically. The instructions of the moderation team must be followed at all times.

Core Values

Generally speaking, as long as the following rules are met you should never find yourself subject to disciplinary action:

  • Ensure a friendly atmosphere to our visitors and forum members.
  • Ensure the privacy of our members and that of others.
  • Comply with both US and Canadian law
  • Encourage responsible use of our forums and discourage activities which disrupt our community and reduce the value of our services to our visitors.
  • Encourage the freedom of expression and exchange of information in a mature and responsible manner.
  • No "lmgtfy" style posts or demeaning posts targeted at anyone.
  • "Don't be a dick" - Wil Wheaton.
  • "Be excellent to each other" - Bill and Ted.
  • Remember your audience; both present and future.

on self-moderation on threads, some members choose to use an ignore feature

and using this gained option isn't conducive to best practices as it causes deeper

animosity and issues within the community. best option is to report disturbance

using the report feature and allow the moderation team to intervene. once report

is made, refrain from interacting to the reportee, further instigating a deeper issue.

That would defeat purpose of contributors in first place. Since @LinusTech has said that they don't want paying to get any special extras. Furthermore paying people don't always have best judgement on things. They just have money lying around.

I don't know if you are troll yourself or just have weird sense of reality. Banning someone from topic because they don't like each other is exactly the reason why this isn't good idea. It would create hate-cycle with people just plain banning those they don't like.

Dislike's have been suggested before but they too would be abused. There are already people getting butthurt over likes that users remove or un-like. And administration don't want them.

Aaand since nobody has linked it, here's the suggestions thread http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/197721-forum-suggestions/

So those are the only two alternatives you allow me?   I'm either a troll or a person with a weird sense of reality?  Thanks for nothing.

Aside from you, I would tell people that if I started a thread and someone started hazing on me (kinda like you just did to me), and started demonstrating ugly replies to me or my topic rather than just moving onto some other thread, why not allow the OP to delete the responses?  Too much power?  Are you kidding me?  It's just some person's personal thread, nothing else.  You don't like it, move on.

Acting like the OP has too much power is very juvenile.  Do you recall having learned in high school when a teacher or principal said "your foe only has as much power as you give him."  Why belittle yourself into thinking that somebody has power over you?  Not unless you submit to it.

If you started a thread, and I disagreed with your post, and said so, and instead of responding to my argument in a mature fashion you deleted my post or banned me, .... well you have demonstrated plenty to me -- I now realize I was not submitting an argument to an adult for discussion.  I realize that the OP was delinquent and so I learn and stay away from his/her thread or posts.  It's called maturity.  If I do not like somebody or something, I do not patronize it.

But apparently a lot of you don't think like this and I wonder why.  How come you lose sleep over something so insignificant?  Beats me.

Sorry if you felt my post was offensive. I see you are pretty new member her (and I'm not gonna use that fact as weapon) and don't know how long you have lurked. But here that kind of comment can go along the guidelines. I'm just wondering there reasons for you to post such comment.

Anyway. This time I'm even more confused. Lets say you start a thread and I post something bit stupid and careless there, not even straight forward offensive. In light of your response, that would be enough reason for you to hide/delete post or even ban poster from whole topic. So if your earlier post was your thread, would I now be banned from it or my comment deleted?

There are no such things as personal threads. Every thread you post here is public and you have to learn to take all positive and negative comments as they come. I've seen cases where OP posts rant about well known product and gets huge amount of negative comments which eventually reveal (when replied by OP) that he/she has actually made mistake on purchase and is seeking kindred spirits. The one thread I'm thinking ended when mod locked with note that it was only locked because of OPs request.

As for me, if someone has problems with me on personal level, my PM box is open.
