Official Nvidia GTX 970 Discussion Thread

So then the drivers must be controlling which blocks of memory are being used then.

umm... no? The iGPU is only going to be rendering your desktop/everything else if that monitor is connected to onboard graphics -- which means it's not connected to the gpu.

Yeah but you cant control it.

You cant say i want 300 MB of the slow VRAM for my porn when my FAST vram plays the game.

Doesnt work like that lol.

Your assumption is incorrect the slow VRAM wont be always used for the desktop.

Its out of your control.

The drivers can though -- All Nvidia would have to do is modify the drivers to affect memory allocation.

NVIDIA can modify the drivers to do that......

Since when do end-users EVER mess with drivers (other than un/installing them).

NVIDIA can modify the drivers to do that......

You are assuming they will do that.

Again , jumping to conclusions.

What if you have 3.5 GB on the game ,0.5 GB on the desktop.

Then you will write to the secondary memory , either RAM or disk.

And then stutter.

Do you follow?

LucidLogix Virtu lets you to exactly what I said. Then you can use the game to exclusively use the GPU while others use the onboard graphics.

The problem is that this is an nVidia product and scoring any nVidia product a "zero" is also highly predictive of the number of nVidia products the reviewer will receive for review in the future.

Or you can have a game use 3.6GB of memory. That will surely stutter.

There is less VRAM available for game usage anyway.

BTW what desktop scenario requires 500MB of VRAM? That's QUITE A LOT.

I'm sitting at 374 with two 1080p monitors with nothing but steam, chrome, and afterburner open.

Multi display, high res, aero themes.

Gimme an example.

Show it with Afterburner.

Or 4k.

Why am I forced to provide the burden of proof all the time. Educate yourself. You two are derailing the topic completely with your annoying cognitive dissonance, lack of general understanding or ability to argue.

The memorybus, whilst not as advertised, is NOT an issue for the 970. End of story. And whilst a 290X has "real 4GB vram" that too suffers from memoryloss by windows desktop, especially at resolutions where it matters (like 4K). So at the end of the line, it matters not if the 970 can allocate that 512MB for desktop use.
