I just thought I'd share this piece of epicness since I know not everyone traverses Reddit.

FAQ from last night:

  • Will be used for digital terrain processing.
  • Host OS is a hypervisor called Proxmox, based on Debian Linux.
  • Using DDR3 1066 RAM to control costs. This memory provides 8.5GB/sec data xfer rate, which is approx 10x faster than the storage array. We need sustained, steady throughput - not bursts of data xfer. Anything faster for this application would be a waste of money. Your mileage may vary.
  • Supermicro motherboard and chassis.
  • Four Intel Xeon 4890v2 processors. Gives 60 total physical cores; 120 logical.
  • Uses solid state SAS drives in RAID 5 with 3 banks.
  • Has a Phi daughtercard; may replace it with Nvidia GRID card if performance is too low.

Ok. Yes it is. In fact, I doubt there's a desktop application that could make use of all of this RAM that isn't Chrome (topkek).

And then there's my work machine that starts to slow down with memory usage 8GB when 32GB is available for it to use...

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

so... let's assume that these are 16GB DIMMs. 1024GB + 512GB = 1536GB. 1536/16 = 94 sticks 94/2 = 47.

 

so this lot is running in quadragintiseptuple channel mode or what? :P

60 cores and 1.5TB of ram. I don't know why it's exciting when i would have no use for it, I guess it's just fun to imagine all that power.
