Worst tech advice you've ever given?

Title says it all.

I have personally recommended an AMD triple core without realizing that it was complete crap. I've also recommended the Pentium G3258 moments before the whole event with FarCry 4...

 

What was some sort of advice that you regret giving at some point?

I'd still recommend the Pentium G3258. I mean, it's very cheap and upgrading down the road is very easy. The single core performance is outstanding too, it's a great CPU for emulation. I would've bought the Pentium G3258 and the Asus Z97 instead of the FX-6300 and Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 if it existed at the time.

 

I haven't had any mistakes so far, at least, none that are regrettable.

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

To buy a 128GB SSD. Well, this was over a year ago when prices were good, but not as good as today. I now recommend people to buy atleast a 256GB SSD as they pretty much are the same price as the 128GB over a year ago.

I'm not that much better than you, I have a 180GB SSD, that is full with only the OS and roughly 5 games. I'm just saying, I use to recommend 128GB SSD's, still did up to about a couple months ago. That's the "worst" tech advice I have ever given. Now my friends want larger SSD's!

 

Oh, BTW, thanks to your mouse guide, I bought a G502 last week after reading it.

I bought into the multithreaded multicore hype which was Bulldozer and the 8150. I think the was the least amount of time I ever spent owning a CPU and motherboard, ~8 months. Here it is 2015 now and I can barely name 3 games with decent support for 8 threads. Sadly I recommended it short in its life to some people.

Telling a relative (new to smartphones) to go with an iphone since its easier. They now swear by Apple and dismiss Android because its "too" difficult. *sigh

probably monitor size recommendation, other than that proud to say never given of a worse advice to someone i know, except on a time when i recommended a low end outdated phone to a friend of mine :/

Don't feel too bad... I recommended a macbook air to an instructor because she has no clue on security nor was she willing to learn how to keep her PC safe...

Honestly, I would've done the same. OSX is great for computer newbs and people like myself alike. Macs are great though for people who can't be bothered to take care of a computer like you kinda have to with Windows.

Well, there's also Elementary OS if they want something Mac-like... and Chromebooks...

 

Heck if I was commissioned to build a PC for someone like that I'll package it with Elementary OS with a custom 'Instruction manual' of my own handiwork...
