Reddit rejects 62% of all copyright complaints

Reddit seems to be a lot of things, but protecting and/or not bowing down to information requests seems to be something they are quite good at dealing with.

According to Reddit, they review every single request and they don't like what they see when they see these requests, largely because the requests don't even fulfill what a DCMA takedown request should contain. Being thorough doesn't seem to be a bad thing, and these guys seem to care enough to take care with user information and requests.

Founded in 2005, the vocal SOPA opponent‘s last set of published stats (Oct 2014) paint an awesome picture: 174 million unique visitors from 186 countries viewed some 6.1 billion pages.

Aside from posting the latest breaking news, AMAs, plus a million items in between, it will come as no surprise that in 2014 some of Reddit’s users also infringed copyright. Details of subsequent complaints have previously remained private but thanks to the publication of Reddit’s very first transparency report, we now have more of an insight.

In 2014 the site received just 218 requests to remove content, 81% of which were DMCA-style copyright notices.

From 176 DMCA complaints received, Reddit removed content in just 76 instances, 38% compliance overall. For a variety of reasons, in 62% of cases Reddit rejected notices completely.

Reddit doesn’t host any content of its own but instead users can post links to material hosted elsewhere, which they do in their millions every day. However, when those links point to infringing content such as movies, music or TV shows, copyright holders tend to see that as facilitation of infringement. Nevertheless, Reddit has its own opinions on what breaches the law.

Same. Its good that they don't just bend over to the people that just throw copyright claims at everything like on YouTube. Although I understand why YoutTube does and kinda has to.

I believe YouTube loses money every year anyway, so they have to try to keep the copyright claims at bay lol.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.

Good to see there are also more "normal" sites then 4chan that ignore those things, we need more of those.

(Yes 4chan has a MDCA policy, but when the complaint arrives, the content is already gone, which makes it as usefull a golden ring for a monkey)

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

Copyright sharks can go eat uranium, and the more middle fingers shown to them before they croak the better.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

I don't visit reddit often, but it's nice to see them giving a huge "**** you" to the abusers of the takedown notices.

Basically what I wanted to say as well.
