Lol my 2gb gtx 770 seems better.

I didn't really see the point of this card at first, but the more I think about it starts to make sense...

From what I see the 960 is better then 285 in every way. So till now if you had a reason to choose r9 285 over r9 280x, now you have even more reasons to choose 960.

If you say the 960 is pointless, then so is 285.

While the 280x will give you more fps for the same price, it lacks tons of other features the 960 has - Gsync, lower temp/noise/power, mfaa. And when DX 12 comes with games that support it, the fps difference will shrink in favor of the 960.

I'm happy to see better power-efficiency, and Maxwell has made that a good point.

 

That said, I'm utterly dissatisfied in how it's being leveraged. If I cared about power efficiency that much I would've changed my GTX 580 ages ago.

 

And this card shouldn't have only 2GB VRAM in this day and age. It's asking for 220€ here, and cheapest 970's go just about sub 300€. Those 970s are with blowers but come on.

 

AMD should start throwing real cards into the mix, and forces nVidia to respond faster than just slow roll with overpriced titans first before releasing the more sensible gaming alternatives. That said I have to say that they've done a masterful job at pumping up the average GPU prices.

 

Hell if Blender utilized OpenCL much better I would have a pair of 290Xs already.

Looking at a whole bunch of reviews, the Strix seems to be the least performing card of them all.   Would be nice to see some benches with the EVGA or MSI cards with the higher power delivery

I think MSI's card deliver the best cooling and performance with a slight overclock over the reference one. EVGA's the highest frequency of the 960's out there but I don't know if it delivers well. But you won't go wrong with any of this 960 cards though

This is Nvidia's big plan. They make a graphics card for $200 and people say meh only $100-$150 more for a GTX970 with better performance so they buy that. They added more hype for the GTX970. That is what I think

Meh. Can't even beat a 280X or 770, which we expected it to perform initially. And the former costs like the more or less the same. :D

 

And for about $50 dollars more, you can obtain an R9 290, which performs almost on par with the $150 more GTX 970, though at the cost of more power and heat output, but ain't nobody got time fo dat! ;)

The 285 is also pointless

I think this every time someone says the GTX 960 was designed to compete with the 285. The R9 285 was pointless from the get go and never needed to have a competing product from nvidia.

This is Nvidia's big plan. They make a graphics card for $200 and people say meh only $100-$150 more for a GTX970 with better performance so they buy that. They added more hype for the GTX970. That is what I think

 

Could be. Nothing prevents them from taking the price or releasing GTX 960 xCore / Ti model to actually represent the value it's supposed to deliver. There's nothing interesting in the form of new cards in the market, GTX 970 is the best thing you can find in the somewhat reasonable range. Everything else is sort of meh, especially if you start taking second-hand market into account.

 

They released Titans to couge early adopters of the market and to make GTX 780 look like a bargain -> increasing the price of the graphics cards across the board. There's no competition in the same way there was when HD4XXX and HD5XXX series were launched. These are kind of like the new intel processors, great for laptops but desktop users couldn't really care much less. For AMD it must suck though, they have some heavy-duty silicon on their boards and I wouldn't be surprised if current HD 290X / 290 costs would be close to a zero-sum game for them.

Buy the PowerColor PCS+ R9 290. It's one of the best 290s for only $250 after rebate!

- In general that price bracket was and has always been the best point for price/performance. I wasn't willing to spend more

- In that price bracket I was aiming for and at the time outperformed other cards in that same bracket (760, 280)

- It supported freesync which before the 285, as an AMD solution, was only supported by the 260 (anaemic) and 290 (would blow the budget)

- Even now the 960 doesn't really beat the 285 and, looking online now, it's at best about the same price as equivalent 285s

 

If I was getting a card now I'd probably lean towards the 960 if only for the lower power consumption at a similar sort of value. It's not exciting but it does the job. But I don't at all regret getting my 285. Partly because it's still holding its own and supports freesync which is a tech that do want to get into (and the same is true of gsync). But also because of changes to the exchange rate meaning that if I spent what I spent on my 285 now I'd only be able to get a 270.

You shouldn't have to trade features for performance, any new card from Nvidia/AMD should have better features, better performance and better power efficiency.

I think that this video card will be very successful for first time builders and 1080P gamers. Not only is the budget great, but this video card would also fit nicely in/with a media PC

See the thing is I didn't trade features for performance because the prices reflect performance pretty well. All of those cards I mentioned, now including the 960, were within 5fps of each other in most games and cost around the same amount. So given that they were at around the same price and with around the same performance? Of course it comes down to things like features and power efficiency. Which is why if I was shopping in that price bracket now I'd go with either the 960 for its power efficiency or the R9 285 as the best AMD alternative.

 

Personally I think the R9 285 should have been called the R9 370... or something... their naming convention sucks and *is* confusing

Give Nvidia a break, it is targeting the entry level gaming card/media PC what do you expect from a 2Gb card?
