Internet outage @ Australia because data center cant cope with record breaking temperatures

ahhming

don't data center have proper cooling to cool equipment ? well not for iiNet as customers across Australia found themselves offline for about six-and-a-half hours after the company shut down some of its systems at its Perth data centre at about 4.30pm AEDST because of high temperatures, topping 44.4C.

Air conditioning?? WTH?? Roflcopter

I'm flabbergasted, what moron decided to build a server farm in one of the hottest regions in the world and skimped out on cooling? I thought AC was supposed to work in these kinda temps? This is just staggering.

Id strongly suggest there's more to this than they're telling, maybe something in the AC system failed and had to be repaired.

Anything over 37 and most airconditioners are horribly unreliable. To the point I recommend setting the ac as high as it goes to reduce over working.

The data centre was probably setup to cool 44c to 16/18 as these are the norm temperature to run stuff at. And anything over a 7c difference can severely reduce an aircons effective lifespan.

Source: I live in a place where it's 40+ for 6 months of the year in Australia. And unlike the south, if the aircons don't work and it's over 33 the kids don't get the day off school. And they go off at least three times a year. Glad my office has an independent split system. =P

I know someone whos with iinet who didn't experience any problems :S Im going with iinet when i get on nbn as they fight for users rights and have won multiple times while also providing a decent and adequate back haul  to hear this is pretty disappointing but fingers crossed they have fixed the issue.

I'm sorry but 44°C is nowhere near record breaking, The ISP not being able to cope with that is BS. You build a data centre in somewhere that has temps above 40°C you should be able to deal with the Temp.

Edit: Also its interesting to see that you put Eastern Daylight Savings time for something that happens in the west.

Wtf we get -30 in Canada or colder are internet dont freeze move here.

Perfect temperatures for running a data center. All you need to do is regulate outside air flow into the facility for essentially free climate control. :D

I'm aware. Not sure about where you live but its quite common for 44° Weather here. Happens multiple times every year. Perth is generally as hot or hotter.

Well yeah, I know but I thought you meant 44c as in server temps. But that was ambient outside temps which was pointed out shouldn't matter since there should be air conditioning in a place like that right?

Both the main and backup A/C units suffered a partial failure apparently. They were forced to shut down a number of servers to prevent overheating.

I lived in Darwin for a number of years, and in school years too (Nightcliff) , I loved that shit, praying for a failure so I could go home :)
