How to not be your grandparents/parents IT guy anymore! No more cleaning viruses every 2 weeks!

My grandparents would make me maintain their computer, which would get so much viruses constantly despite malwarebytes pro + avg internet security pro. They're old, and only use the web browser (firefox), and usually browse russian websites so I guess the AV's don't know those viruses yet.

I used to re-install windows every 2 weeks or so; but one-day it hit me! They just use the browser!

I installed Linux Mint Debian (Closest looking thing to windows), got their bookmarks toolbar with all the links they like, installed their printer, and now they're in heaven; and I won't have to deal with them anymore! I also installed a ton of games from the app-store and they love em!

Moral of the story: If a family member that constantly fucks up their PC uses JUST a web-browser, slap on a linux distro (not ubuntu with unity). No viruses, same browser, no fixing, errbody happy!

Is that easier? I don't know, you'd save yourself a lot of pain by just installing Linux.  It's painless.

Exactly what I did for a friend ^^ she used nothing that linux couldn't provide and I told her it would be a lot faster (100% true considering she has a netbook with 1gb of ram) and would get no viruses.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

If they don't pay you, charge them like any other PC tech with respect for themselves would or ask them to hire a professional instead. Occasionally fixing something for family or friends is not a big deal to me, but if you allow them to abuse you like that you dug your own grave.

Because they're old, don't speak english, and are from russia?

And I live in NY, moving away is not common overhear, you live with your parents till at least 25; a 1 bedroom apartment is ~1300/month

Well it is an old laptop, and trust me they get more viruses than lindsy lohan in a week.

With Linux Mint Debian (Cinnamon) they're happier than they've been using windows. They got firefox, popcorntime, a bunch of games, and it's fast a.f

Also libre-office word was a bit different than microsoft word, but they like it.

We got our parents iPads. I'm not an Apple fan, but for parents that would otherwise just use a computer floor the general stuff, I wouldn't really recommend anything else. We've tried Ubuntu with them on their computer, but despite how far Linux has come still ran into usability issues. I'm sure a built-for-Linux machine like from System76 would solve some of those issues.

Ubuntu went down the drain with their new UI, that's why I don't suggest it -- that's why I went with linux mint -- gnome interface, has a windows-like look, much stable, so safe, many no complaints, wow
