Logitech Proteus Core G502 Review

Well, first of all I got the mouse because Linus' review was mostly positive.
Another reason for going with this mouse was that I have had bad experiences with less renowned manufacturers, so I thought going with Logitech as a brand would be a good choice.
So this seemed to be the goto-option, and unlike many others' positive experiences mine was quite different.

Lets start with the positive stuff:
- The overall design and feel when holding in your hand is very good. The textured surface on the pinky and thumb rests feels grippy and rubbery, but not too soft at the same time.
- The buttons (right click, left click, forward, back, dpi up, dpi down, "sniper button" and profile change button) feel very distinctive and satisfying to press.
- The polytetrafluoroethylene feet are very slippery and have next to no resistance.
- The weight customization option by opening up the magnetic bottom cover is nice and very easy and fast to use.
- (subjective) The design with Logitech's blue/black scheme looks also very slick and striking.
- The software works flawlessly with really easy navigation and customization, and all the profiles are stored directly on the mouse making it easy to take with you.

On to the negative points:
- The braided cord, which every gaming mouse seems to have these days, is to heavy for my taste. Even with a mouse cord holder it drags on your aim, especially towards the edges of the mouse pad.
- There is no colour customization. Its not a must, but for 60 bucks it would definitely be a nice feature to have.
- The mouse wheel is one of the worst I have yet encountered. Due to the "free spin" mode the normal scrolling feels very mushy and uncontrolled, making it hard to scroll an exact number of clicks.
- Also due to the "free spin" implementation the wheel has quite a bit of leeway to the right and left causing it to wiggle around a lot. This also makes middle clicking very difficult in the middle of battle, becuase unless you hit it exactly centered, the wheel will drift to the side doing only a left or right scroll click.
- The weight balance is very front heavy and combined with the heavy cord it makes fast precise movements near impossible.
- Last but, definitely not least: The sensor is a complete failure. I'll go a bit more in depth on this one.
 

No gamer on earth needs 12000 or 8200 or even 6000 dpi. It feels like developing very high sensitivities caused Logitech to cheap out on precision at the low end. As a competitive fps player, my standard dpi is usually 800. At this point the sensor tends to not register certain movements at all or just twitch around weirdly. Not all the time, but at least once every 15 minutes. Trying the surface tuning within the software didn't help either. Completely unusable. Of course, I rma'd it right after I noticed this problem, but the second one wasn't an improvement. The same issues persisted, but additionally about twice a day it randomly does a horizontal and vertical 360 degree turn, completely spazzing out.
At this point I felt kind of pranked, spending 60 bucks on a "quality" product.
Needless to say I sent it back again to Amazon to get a refund.

Conclusion: I feel like Logitech just lost scope of what a quality gaming mouse should be all about: a flawless sensor. Maybe its just me, but I am not satisfied with a mouse that is working fine only 99 percent of the time. And even taking all the other features into account like the software, design and overall feel when holding it.
That's just not worth 60 bucks. Clearly not a recommendation from me.

You know that you can turn the free spin on and off?

You can also choose how the weight is distributed by moving around the included weights.

You can also change the DPI.  There are the presets, and then you can change them to meet your exact needs.  You can also change the polling rate.  Even if you have to set the DPI higher than you would like in the mouse, just change the mouse sensitivity in game.  This is a very simple work around.

 

I do agree that not having an RGB LED is a major negative for such an expensive mouse, especially with it being the norm now.

 

I feel like your complaints are ticky tacky.

RGB wasn't a huge thing 10 months ago when the mouse was released like it is now. Also having a faulty sensor isn't fair on the mouse having a complete failure of a sensor. I'm sure most people's work just fine.

- You can click a button to get ride of the free spin.

- The left and right of the mouse wheels is buttons. Mine doesn't move very well to be able to click left or right so I always able to click the center every time.  

Have the mouse myself and I love it. I love the free spin mode myself. Good review of it though so I know what other people are having problems with. I mostly just keep mouse mouse at 3000 DPI and that's it.

Bought a razor ouroboros thingy and hated it. Replaced it with this mouse and this mouse is one of the best ive ever owned.

It took me a little while to get used to the mouse wheel but I don't think its as bad as you say. When I first started using the mouse I was confused about where my right pinky should go. I've ended up keeping that finger bent so the nail is touching the rubber gripping which is... acceptable. Honestly my biggest complaints about the mouse are that, as a claw grip user, the "shift" button is useless because my right thumb is never anywhere near it, and the dpi change buttons are too sensitive (with software presets being way too low for my taste).

I just got it today, my only complaints are that the software is kind confusing and lacks good documentation, the other is the shape lacking some pinky support that would be nice. Then, the palm support extending out the back towards the bottom just by a few millimeters would have greatly improved my experience.

I bought this mouse for FPSs(manly cs:go) and coding and am very pleased, however I am by no means a expert.

I have a Corsair M45 and bought this from the Black Friday Best Buy sale where ya get a $50.00 steam card with it.

 

Honestly, they're both great mice and I play CS:GO with this G502 just fine. Maybe you got a sample from a bad batch?

If the price is bothering you then grab the G402 for 20bucks less.. Same mouse, better sensor, less texture and less alien.

If one does not fail at times, then one has not challenged himself.

That was a really good review. Glad, I went for the Mionix Naos 7000 instead.

G502 has like 10x more features than the mionix 7000

You got a dud g502.

So this review is pretty much useless as your not fully reviewing the g502 in its full capability

I got some news for you buddy, some of us do need 6k or even over 8k-12k dpi. I play at 4800dpi on a 1080p monitor. And if i were to get a 4k monitor i woild need 2x That do 9600dpi. And if i were to get a 5k one i would want a mouse That could do 12800dpi, sir.

I don't know if this is still happening with their Driver Software. But the Logitech Game Software has Mouse Acceleration on by default. I had those problems happen to me when I windows key out of games and go back into them.

I deactivated Acceleration and the problem went away.

The G502 is the best mouse I have ever used. I love the thumb holder and heavy mice. The free scroll can easily be disabled and the sensor is one of the greatest in the world for gaming. At $59 it is a steal, not to mention the build quality and number of macros.

This is why I got a G700s. Just buy one goddamn good mouse and buy another after many years.

 

It was a replacement for a cheap mouse and I've learned my lesson. Don't buy cheap mice and headphones.
