FCC: BROADBAND HAS TO BE 10MBPS/1MBPS

themodernagenb

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has decided that Internet providers that use government subsidies to build rural broadband networks must offer speeds of at least 10Mbps download and 1Mbps upload. This is an increase from the previous requirement of 4 Mbps/1 Mbps speeds set in 2011. However, their original definition remains 4Mbps download and 1Mbps upload (something that they will immediately update I bet).

Of course ATT had something to say about that. "Given the pace at which the industry is investing in advanced capabilities, there is no present need to redefine 'advanced' capabilities... Consumer behavior strongly reinforces the conclusion that a 10Mbps service exceeds what many Americans need today to enable basic, high-quality transmissions." Verizon made similar arguments.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease. I'm sick of 3/1Mbps internet and they classifiy it as broadband.  Pathetic 54Kbps speeds.

What's the average internet speed like in the US? Over here in Australia we get pretty rubbish speed compared to the rest of the world.

I would be happy with gigabit lan ports at the bus stop.  :D

Northeast American here, I get 60/60 from Comcast and pay ~$120 a month. Wireless only gets 24/20 but that's normal I suppose, with multiple computers and phones running. I think 10/1 is pretty terrible if you ask me, especially since most companies will jack up their prices for this "new standard".

You may have rubbish speeds, but there are obviously better providers.

Download isn't the issue you goons, its upload. I can have 100 down and if I can only send 1 up, its still a shitty connection.

Meh, I don't think upload speeds needs to improve that much more, maybe just 2 up... If you need crazy upload speeds, you should be paying for a business line. If you don't want to pay for the crazy upload speeds, then you just don't need it. I really don't want to make it easier for people to upload crazy amounts of videos/pictures on sites about their pets and whatever else that is pointless. There's a lot of content that gets uploaded that really just don't matter...

Thank you, ATT, for proving once again that you are unqualified to tell me what I need.

Maybe I'm taking that statement out of context though.

Telstra is actually one of the top providers in Aus. In fact they do all the cabling for internet and phone lines. We had something going here called the National Broadband Network (NBN) where fiber optic cables were being rolled out for super fast internet. Only after election when the new government moved into house they scrapped they project and cancelled the rollout.

Unfortunately I was unable to experience the glory of fiber.....

I get between 75-100/75-100 because in my university town you can pay to have a house attached to the military backbone line Miami University is on. And it's only $45 a month split between the number of people in a house.

1. Buying each other and colluding to have no competition between ISP's DOES NOT COUNT AS INVESTING IN THE INDUSTRY.

2. Who in fuck are you talking to that says "no, I don't want more than 4Mbps, I want horribly slow overpriced internet"

I have 10/1 down and up, and it is NOWHERE NEAR sufficient, especially when century link throttles my youtube videos.

Edit: Is the new definition megaBITS or megaBYTES? 10/1 megaBYTES would be awesome.
