On a rig out of need:

700USD on the main rig+peripherals+software...

On a rig out of want:

1500USD tops on everything...

Additional 250USD on DIY partial room soundproofing and audio gear...

I'd keep the PC itself under 2k but I'd probably spend a lot on peripherals. If it's helping me do my job, I'd spend a lot in monitors.

My most expensive builds tend to top out a $1500. Simply because anything above that is where I start to see deminishing returns. I can build a decent gaming rig with plenty of upgrade room for around $800. My current rig sits at around $1000 but it's been close to a year since I built it.

Can't speak for myself as I haven't graduated college yet, but I've got friends who make minimum and are hiring me to build some low end gaming PCs for about $500 each around black Friday time.

I'd spend no more than $4000 including monitors, peripherals etc. Too much money to spend on a computer for god's sake.
