[ExtremeTech] Will Windows 9, and all future Microsoft OSes, simply be called ‘Windows’?

There is an increasing amount of evidence that Microsoft is preparing to drop all of its different brands of Windows — Windows Phone, Windows 8, Windows 9, Windows RT — and simply call them all Windows. When Windows 9 is unveiled at the end of September, it might be called Windows — no numeral, no identifier, nothing

What a silly idea, how many desktop OS's (and mobile for that matter) have no identification to which version it is?

 

What will the next one be called? Windows 2? Windows?

See, in the article they expect this to solve problems like "Why is it called Windows Phone if it can't run Windows programs?!". Yeah, because Windows can't run Windows programs now.

Why? Microsoft's naming scheme is one of the few that make sense...

I find that Ubuntu's one makes the most sense. year.month.

I think to their massive average consumer market it would be beneficial , easier to market and adapt. 

 

but to gamers and enthusiasts it'll just annoy us.

I think most people will just call it windows 9, even thought it's not official.

Sure and after this you can just call the next one "W2" and the one after that "Windows: The Last Stand".

AMD uses it for driver versions too.

Honestly one of my contributions before quitting work was switching the filing systems to year.month.day its hands down the best way to organise anything numerical on a pc.

I don't mind that as long as they still have a way to distinguish between the different types. So they can advertise it as just Windows but so that different versions could be identified as e.g. Windows (Build 9200) just like they were up until now.

I think you guys are missing the point here. It'll likely just be referred to as "Windows" in marketing and advertizing. Similar to how Apple markets every OS X version as just "OS X" excluding the .7 .8 .9, etc.
