So I want to make a video about building a PC dos and donts and heres some points I want to hit on:

DO:

1) When choosing a case for your PC, always keep in mind future upgrades and plenty of space for extra drives, radiators etc. you know what Im talking about if you have ever tried to install an H100i in a Define R4

 

2) When choosing a motherboard, make sure your CPU socket type matches the type of you motherboard

 

3) Work on tile or wood surface and avoid carpet

 

4) Run your ram in dual channel for better performance. This means if you have 2 ram modules, install them into the 2nd and 4th slots on your motherboard

 

5) If you can, make room in your budget for an SSD to increase performance

 

DONT:

1) Skimp on a power supply. If you dont have enough power running to your components you run the risk of damaging them. 

 

2) Do not be afraid to check your motherboard manual for help

 

3) Do not forget to install motherboard standoffs in your case to avoid shorting out your motherboard

 

4) Do not use the anti static bags your components come in as a work bench. The outside of the bags conduct static electricity and will short out your component.

I see lots of mistakes made while rushing.

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

One doesn't need to research for 3-4 months to build a PC. I did a weeks worth when I successfully built my first PC.

Don't: Always put stands off for your motherboard or it will short out

Don't When using the motherboard box as a test bench, don't put the anti-static bag under the motherboard when testing it with power.

DONT: Lick any components. (no matter how tempting)

I've licked plenty of components and I haven't caused any damage lol

 

Most recently of which my friend was so worried about installing a damn Core 2 Duo, just simply afraid to touch the bottom of the CPU, that I grabbed it, licked the bottom, wiped it off with my shirt, and plopped it in the socket. After applying thermal paste, installing cooler and finishing the rest of the PC, it worked perfectly fine.

And then do it for another 3-4 months and save and throw out your cheap AMD build and get a decent AMD or Intel build. (I went cheap AMD at first, APU's suck ass)

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

Don't put ram in a PCI-E slot.

Don't screw too tight otherwise if you do, you will damage a motherboard.

Do get aftermarket thermal compound and cooling solutions.

 

Don't over-do it with the thermal paste.

Nvidia is to Dr Dre Beets as AMD is to KFC.

One makes you broke, the other you can get more of and have a midnight snack from the fridge when hungry again. Once you go Nvidia, you go broked, turn into an Elitist, or get the incorrect amount of VRAM.

Not to mention too much thermal paste is like JB weld.

I had to reinstall my H100i 6 times into the bracket because I was in a rush :P cost more time

Don't use included driver discs. Instead download the latest software and drivers from the manufacturer's website.

And don't overspend on power supply wattage since power supplies run most efficient at around 50% load (i.e. a 1200 watt power supply with a computer that only has one GPU).

Don't: buy a workstation GPU for gaming. Just because it's more expensive then a titan doesn't mean it performs better then a titan.

 

Do: ask for a second opinion

Thats not really a "Don't", its Advice.

 

Because there is nothing wrong with buying a high watt PSU with almost any kind of build. You have to remember, Good quality PSU's can last a life time, so its better to get a high wattage PSU, so you don't have to worry about not having enough power in the future when you upgrade your componets. Besides, its good to have a High Wattage PSU laying arround, you never know when you might need that extra Wattage.
