Whats your favorite deleted topic of today?

Rorgash

The idea comes from just about every other forum on the internet. Off Topic sections are generally considered to be "anything goes", usually with racism, actual pornography, and harassment being the exceptions most of the time, they usually allow "spam", general pointlessness, and even on some forums self advertisment

The reason they do this, is to allow this sort of content to aggregate itself into one little space that most of the community ignores, and make things easier on the modding staff since they don't have to constantly move/delete such stuff. Hell, the tiny gaming guild I am apart of has one.

Edit: I really have trouble believing you guys (the mods) haven't seen/heard of this before. It's typically common practice

That may be true for some sites. But just because they choose to operate that way

does not mean that we will too.

The Off Topic section of a forum is usually put there to give users a place to chill

out and discuss things not necessarily directly related to the nature of the forum.

However, they are usually still closely monitored and moderated. Offensive,

sexual or otherwise objectionable content is usually deleted.

The Off Topic section on Linus Tech Tips is still governed by the Code of Conduct.

As such, offensive or objectionable content will be removed.

This is the first forum that I've ever seen where mods closely monitored the off topic section (at least for forums with off topic sections, which aren't on all forums), other than for blantant pornography, racism, harassment, etc. That's all I'm really trying to point out.

The issue I have with this is where in the past, mods have deleted threads from OT that were in no way offensive or violations of the CoC. Specifically one entitled "this is how I feel at parties". Just saying that you guys might want to chill a bit in OT. It is OT, so just because people report "this is a tech forum (which it isn't, it's off topic) blah blah blah", you might want to think a moment first, or allow 1 or 2 pages to see if an actual interest in the thread develops.

It irritates people, and it makes some of us feel like the mods are just running wild, despite whatever you might assure us is "happening in the background" because after all, it's just your word, and actions speak louder than words. So far, the actions I have seen suggest that some mods are acting without consulting or even thinking, although because instead of just locking the thread they delete it, I can't actually say who is even doing it.

So, would racial, religious, and political anything be gone if seen here?

Essentially yes, that has been my experience. and it bothers me. it's censorship, and it's what I've been trying to point out.

But it's not limited to topics, it's unlimited to anything the mods decide doesn't belong. Which is a contradiction to the idea of a CoC. Generally speaking a CoC is a rigid guideline of what is forbidden which usually is the following things.

1. Pornographic materials

2. Spam

3. Racism

4. Harassment

5. Attempting to sell things (which I guess counts as spam)

I've never experienced a forum that is quite as "tight assed" (I don't mean that to be offensive, just the best way to put it) in the off topic section as LTT seems to be.

My point overall is that it's hard to determine what is "appropriate" if the guidline isn't strictly adhered to by those enforcing it, as one has no way of determining what a mod is thinking
