Whats your favorite deleted topic of today?

Rorgash

This was probably why the mods were on strike. All of this crap nonsense.

I do dislike the mods though, except Windspeed, but I have seen plenty of power abuse here.

I use the forum quite a lot, and all the mods I've seen are plenty polite (albeit I can think of one that is a bit heavy handed) and non-abusive.

I'd argue they don't use their power enough, the forum is undermoderated.

^ my point entirely.

You cannot have a CoC, and then allow moderators to delete threads that do not violate that CoC. It's an abuse of power, and it pisses people off. I feel like there's no point in my making any new threads ever, because there's a chance they will get deleted by some asshole with a god complex who just "didn't like it"

It's not about attitude, it's about them deleting some threads that didn't break any rules in the past.

I'm honestly not aware of which threads you guys are talking about, what is allowed has been pretty progressive from my view.

I think we should protest over the mods.

For example I remember a thread asking for how much the user could sell a system, deleted instantly.

He was asking the value, not to sell it on the forum.

I complained but to no succes, the user was new too.

I'm talking a general behavioral pattern, one or two mishaps is acceptable due to the fact that they're... well, not machines

In cases where that would happen you would usually take that to slick, though I can say with certainty that's a pretty rare occurrence.

Most people don't actually notice and make their judgements based on only what they see and their negative impacts. There's A LOT of work being done correctly that people either don't notice or ignore.

How come it gets brushed of as 'one or two mishaps'.

No, not acceptable, it's certainly not a small amount, it was in the past anyway, but there were other things that were just unacceptable.

Seriously unacceptable. I say we go on strike.

I remember one thread specifically where a user posted (in off topic) a drawing of some sort, that depicted how he felt at parties, and then asked how other people felt. Deleted after 4 posts because of 2 assholes saying "this doesn't belong in a tech forum" Despite the fact that off topic description says "NON TECH RELATED CONTENT ONLY PLEASE". Which pissed me off because I spent about 10 minutes writing a reply, only to see "thread not found". The worst part is, he only wanted to discuss how he felt, and learn how others felt. ERMAGERD DELETE DAT

This is what I am talking about, the mods on here delete things on a whim, and always without explanation.

To me, this is a breech of trust, it negates the very idea of this being a "forum" for discussion. This is a place where we are only allowed to talk about what some anonymous (because we can't see who deleted what) assholes think we should be allowed to discuss.

End the imprisonment of off topic section! NOW!

OK, I should say that I haven't been around too much lately due

to bad health, so I haven't seen that infamous porn thread, for

example, and can't answer and specific questions about that.

But going through this thread, some general remarks about a few

points raised here:

Off-Topic

The Off-Topic section is not a section where anything goes. It

is a catch-all section for stuff which doesn't fit into any of

the other categories. I do not know where the idea came from

that it's an "anything goes" subforum, because that is not at

all the case.

CoC, Moderator Privileges

As has been mentioned, the CoC is not an all-inclusive book

of law taking into account every single eventuality and situation.

That is simply not a feasible.

The CoC serves as the foundation for forum moderation, but

it does not, in fact it cannot, cover every situation conceivable

in an appropriate fashion. Sometimes a stricter hand is needed,

sometimes a bit of leniency is appropriate, other times we encounter

a scenario which simply has not been covered because it hadn't been

thought of when the CoC was written. In order to be able to

react appropriately in such situations, some discretion for

moderative action is required.

Now, a small remark about that: We very rarely decide such cases

by ourselves. Behind most decisions which are not clear-cut black

and white stands a discussion between several members of the

moderator team. So even though you might only see one of our names

on whatever measure ends up being taken, it is in almost all

cases not a lone decision, but in fact the result of a team

discussion.

Also, as clearly stated in the CoC: If you have an issue with

moderator action, please contact us and/or Slick about it.

Freedom of Speech, Censorships etc.

or may not be appropriate for it.

-snip

The idea comes from just about every other forum on the internet. Off Topic sections are generally considered to be "anything goes", usually with racism, actual pornography, and harassment being the exceptions most of the time, they usually allow "spam", general pointlessness, and even on some forums self advertisment

The reason they do this, is to allow this sort of content to aggregate itself into one little space that most of the community ignores, and make things easier on the modding staff since they don't have to constantly move/delete such stuff. Hell, the tiny gaming guild I am apart of has one.

Edit: I really have trouble believing you guys (the mods) haven't seen/heard of this before. It's typically common practice
