So who is planning on switching to x99 as their main platform and why?

If you are looking at it and shaking your head...Why not?

I might. A more appropriate question would be: "Why not?"

Edited :)

Maybe, because of DDR4 being implemented. Still I won't have the money to afford that extreme platform in anytime. Better stick with Z/H platforms

I'm a little bit excited for the 8-core CPU but I don't get why people are excited for DDR4 as we already have fast DDR3 modules with lower timings.

DDR4 is going to be the biggest difference and is quite exciting I suppose. I want my next build to be mitx though and x99 would be pretty useless on mitx so...yeah.

More cores hopefully :D

Its just a shame we can expect DDR4 prices to be stupidly expensive for the first couple of years  (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-183-CR)

Nope, I'm waiting for the second generation that would be either more streamlined less buggy. Unless DDR4 is able to provide a HUGE boost in price/performance, it doesn't seem like it would matter. Not to mention waiting for the RAM manufactures to produce enough DDR4 to bring it down to a reasonable price. DDR3 is still pretty pricey for 8gb of ram.

I could care less about anything new coming out as I won't have the money to spend on it and I won't have any money to spend on pc hardware probably for at least 2 years.  Now even if I had the money to spend on pc hardware I can't say I know enough about what x99 will offer to excite me but can say that if I was able to put together a rig to play games at 4K well now that would be something to go crazy over.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

Highly depends on what clock speed you're looking at, the kits rated for 2133MHz are just a little more expensive than DDR3. As for how soon the prices will drop, that will probably depend on how soon DDR4 finds it's way to other platforms. Once production on these are ramped up, you'll see the price come down a lot on the high frequency kits as well.

Desktop:     Core i7-9700K @ 5.1GHz all-core = ASRock Z390 Taichi Ultimate = 16GB HyperX Predator DDR4 @ 3600MHz = Asus ROG Strix 3060ti (non LHR) = Samsung 970 EVO 500GB M.2 SSD = ASUS PG279Q

Notebook:  Clevo P651RG-G = Core i7 6820HK = 16GB HyperX Impact DDR4 2133MHz = GTX 980M = 1080p IPS G-Sync = Samsung SM951 256GB M.2 SSD + Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SSD

Well at least things will be much smoother and pricing will be better on the road, unlike back in the early DDR3 days when the price gap is quite huge

Im actually not excited for X99 looks ike a ''10 %'' upgrade to me.

I rather want to see Skylake in the future and AMD RD790 chipset because of more pci express lanes.

plus ddr4 will then be cheaper or we will have ddr69 ready. jk

I'm not excited as I don't have bags o' gold I can just pick out with some ear buds every week. I'm not even excited for DDR4, the technological advancements I like, but if I can't hold it or plan it in an upcoming build than I have no excitement or real interest in them.
