15.6" vs 17.3" screen size?

I want to buy a certain laptop but I cannot find the 17.3 screen size version of it. And considering that 17.3 cost extra too, is it worth paying more to get a 17.3 laptop? Right now I'm using a 19" monitor. 17.3 would probably be easier for me to adjust. What is your preference?

depends what you are doing with the laptop if its for gaming you want 17 inch if its for work and whatever it doesn't matter :P

I prefer 17.3. 15.6 is still doable though. Depends really on the size of the container you'll be using to transport it. My backpacks barely fit it and I couldn't find any reasonably priced book bags for it.

It depends, if it's going to be a desktop replacement maybe 17.3'' is the way to go. If not and you want to use it in bed/on the couch / on the go etc 15.6'' is prefered IMO.

depends what you are doing with the laptop if its for gaming you want 17 inch if its for work and whatever it doesn't matter :P

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

 Do you plan on moving around alot? If so, just get the 15.3 and buy a monitor to plug in that's 24" or something.

 

17.3 is sometimes more expensive, but at least its bigger, heavier, etc etc.

yep. I work more than I game though. I really need to game more. The screen is great. Bit reflective though.

What laptop is it?

For gaming and/or productivity and/or a lot of movies 17.3 is much better especially if your using the keyboard on it.

I've seen 18.4" laptops, but none that are gaming oriented like ASUS ROG...

It's an alienware m18x. I only got it cause I got a great price used. I wouldn't recommend buying a new alienware 18. Way to pricey.

Yah I know. It's actually a really good laptop, but not for the price. It even has hdmi input, my favorite feature and the only brand to offer that.

It's really all about the specs but consider this: check the weight of both, get a backpack or something and put a bunch of rocks inside until you match the weight. Carry it around for a day, even just a few hundred extra grams can actually make a difference, particularly if you depend on stuff like public transport.

All depends on what you're going to use it for. If it's going to sit on a desk and only be moved occasionally then 17.3" is fine, but if you're an on the go person and it's going to be following you then go 15.6" or possible slightly smaller. The 17.3" is a pain to carry anywhere, and unless you've got a large bag it takes up most of your storage space. I've had a 17.3" ASUS gaming laptop for the last 4 years and while I loved the size at first I absolutely hate it now (still love the lappy though!).

 

When I'm back into the laptop market, which might be very soon, the biggest I'll be looking is 15.6". To be honest, that ASUS G550 lappy Linus looked at recently fits my bill great.

 

Adjust to screen size really isn't a big deal at all. Use the new size for a little bit and you're good. Don't go bigger if adjusting is your main concern.
