Turning PC off \ putting to Sleep \ Keeping on

Was wondering this for a while now..

I usually keep my PC on when I leave for work in the morning, but lately I've decided to put it to sleep or even turn it off since I'm gone for 9-12 hours usually and I don't want it to function as a vacuum cleaner for no reason..

Wanted to hear your opinion on the matter.. do you guys leave it on regardless? do you turn it off every day? or do you use the sleep option? do any of the above have any positive\negative repercussions?

I would much rather just turn it off than have it put on sleep, but then I have a need to keep certain programs open to avoid losing work on computer.

My reasons in a list for turning it off when I'm going to bed and not using it for more than 2 hours.

It saves power,

I have no need to leave it on 24/7

SSD boot times and actual time it takes for programs to become usable make it so I can be up and running on google in under a minute.

I guess its just less time for my AIO pump to be running so maybe I will add to its lifespan.

I usually just set mine to F@overnight on medium/low intensity so it has something to do but doesn't cook all night. Occasionally, I will turn it off to give it a rest or clean it. The normal stretch is about 3 days continuously before some kind of shutdown.

Your PC sucks in dust regardless of the fan speeds.. Even if you configure the pressure in your case to be positive, ie more intake than exhaust, you will eventually accumulate dust, I have a negative pressure case, one 200mm intake, one 200mm exhaust and one 120mm exhaust, which in my opinion lets less dust in and is a more efficient cooling solution.

Also I keep ALL my fans (cpu, intake, exhaust) speeds very slow @~ 500RPM (via a fan controller) unless I'm gaming.

I do pay the power bill, but PC's are mostly power efficient, Iv'e never noticed anything out of the ordinary in my power bill, it's quite normal and to be honest, lower than most of my friends.

Also, Iv'e never kept my PC on for faster response time reasons, my OS is installed on an ssd and if my PC is asleep\off or even on, it will be in the desktop in less than 20 seconds.

Then why leave it on? especially when at work (or asleep or not using the PC)

I shut mine down whenever it is not  in use, if I was popping away from the pc for say an a hour or 2 I would sleep it/hibernate if a little longer. But at night or when at work its completely off

I am just curious as to how other people are behaving, you can never learn enough :)

Anyhow, as to my preference, sleeping my PC is now what I do every morning.

it's on at night though as it is my main downloading time, and my alarm clock is on my PC :) (my phone is charged in a drawer in my desk, not near my bed) it's completely silent, fans down and hdd's sleeping, can't hear it even if I wanted to.

this is probably a big reason for people who leave it on

I usually turn off my desktop PC whenever I'm not using it, because of SSD boot times.

My laptop I usually leave on 24/7, but whenever I need to take it with me (back when I went to school) I usually just put it to sleep. This is mostly due to the fact that it is SLOOOOW at booting up and I'm very impatient with those things. :P

Yeah 150Mb is indeed impressive.. I only have 15Mb, no problems watching Netflix in Super HD in the living room and playing COD with zero lag at the same time, but throwing in a movie+3-5 episodes of various TV shows torrent will certainly make me go read a book or something. which could be a good think I guess..

Desktop PC

  • When I am home I leave it on
  • When I am away I put it to Sleep
  • When I am away for an extended period of time I put it in Hibernation

Laptop PC

  • Hibernation all the time (unless I am using it obliviously)

Only time I ever shutdown is when I did something that required a reboot and I was going to be putting it in sleep or Hibernation anyway.

Only time I ever reboot is when  I did something that requires a reboot.

Only time I ever leave my PC on overnight is when its Downloading or something like that.

I leave mine on over night to fold and download, but I have basically no dust get in due to filters/fractals great design choices.
