Ghetto computer outside exhaust system

Jakekuchiki

I'm not sure how many people suffer from hot rooms in the summer due to either poor air conditioning or small rooms? My computer is only a i5 3570 and a gtx670 and during the summer I just sweat even when my 670 is clocked all the way down to 324mhz on the core. I am very sensitive to heat but I finally had enough, I wasn't willing to buy a ceiling fan nor do I have the funds for one and having a desk fan would just annoy my friends on skype.

This ghetto awful solution I have created although not appealing in the slightest actually works perfectly and internal temps only rose about 5c at MAX.

When I google other people trying to create such a system I can't find anything besides somehow worse implementations.

Behold~

This cost about 28$ in parts and some painting sticks and duct tape,

I had to seal everything up besides the 200mm intake in the front and the two Corsair SP120's forcing the air through the duct work

Has anyone else tried this or needed/wanted to try this before? I'm surprised I haven't seen more of this.

I am in no way a handy man so this is the best I was able to do,

I know it's ugly and not pleasing but feel free to comment.

I was as surprised as anyone that it actually worked, I didn't think the fans were going to be enough to get the air all the way through

That's really cool! Always thought about cooling my pc with that type of "integration" into the house... awesome!

Ha, oh man... that's very unique.

Here in Canada, we only get like 30 celcius (86 fahrenheit) average during summer. It's been 25 c (77 f) most days so far and I don't even feel too hot. My computer temps have only changed a degree or two...

Still though, this is just... wow.

I've been thinking about that idea for ages, now I see somebody do it. It does make your rig look a bit like a laundry machine IMO.

Did you cut a hole in the wall for the outdoor exhaust or did you ghetto rig a window?

Also, you should invest in a better air conditioner.

We pay enough for air conditioning and I can't justify the entire house being ice cold just for the one room to be cool

I had to ghetto rig it into the window, I used another duct end piece and taped a screen on it facing down so no water/bugs could get in

You have central air? If the central air is not good enough choke up 700 dollars for a Fujitsu Halcyon split unit, I have one and it's really efficient and quiet. You have to pay for labour tho, the consumer cannot install it him/herself.

Edit- you could have used a piece of acrylic, cut a hole in it for the duct, and rigged it to that.

As much as that would be a more physically appealing option I still prefer my 28$ work around until I figure something out. Yeah we have central air it's just old and not powerful enough I guess, it's set at 70F (Canadian but still uses fahrenheit for temperature) and still just doesn't do squat.

How much lower are the temperatures in the room around your desk?

Don't have a thermometer to really show the difference but I went from sweating to having a quite chilly room even when it's 30c outside so I'm quite happy with the results.

;)

I could do this, though. I have a ballsy little Dell sitting next to me, and it dumps out a decent amount of heat. But I use my dresser as a desk so all of the hot air just blows down in back of the dresser. And even then, the window is right next to me. :D

So this is a more narrowed down view.

gallery_37587_679_52044.jpg

And the gap is just barely smaller than my Dell (about 1-1.5cm smaller, in fact).
