Alienware Alpha (steam machine) launching Q4 without Steam OS

Looks like Steam OS or no Steam OS ( or more like steam controller or no steam controller) alienware is releasing their console (formally steam machine) for the holiday season. It has a custom soldered on maxwell gpu with 2gb vram, starts at $550 and most parts are upgrade-able (except the gpu)... and comes with windows 8 (face palm). I really like the looks and size of their case compared to other steam machines i've seen.. so i'm pretty excited for its launch.

For all the parts you get with this... they arent making much of any profit on it. I'll probably grab one just to mess around with it... though i'lll swap out the i3 for another haswell i have sitting around.

Its actually not that bad of a deal. Of course, you can get more performance for your dollar but it seems they are being reasonable. And the inclusion of Wireless AC is a big thumbs up.

A 750 Ti wouldn't be too bad for in home streaming. Also, given that it's for TV use it wouldn't be that bad compared to a console.

And my comment still stands. 7 is a performance downgrade from 8. So why do it unless your hardware just flatout doesn't work with 8?

Windows 8 is objectively superior to 7. If you don't like the interface download classic shell, but going back and putting windows 7 which performs about 10% worse in games, and various other improvements missing is flat out stupid.

I know Alienware is not popular but I think this is more of an issue with Valve: It's exactly what I've been saying since they delayed their controller, they're just not ready for this holiday season and unlike gamers, hardware vendors are not willing to put up with their fucking Valve time and lose on a holiday season. This is bad it could very well end up costing Valve a lot of hardware vendor support and dooming proper driver support for Linux because of it.

No. You'd be hard done by to find a new PC build on this forum that uses Windows 7 over Windows 8 (apart from cases where they have spare keys for it). Windows 8 is superior over Windows 7 in every single way.

Don't like the new interface? How about just sucking up and dealing with it? I've been using Windows 8 since the very first development builds and haven't had a single issue with it. 8.1 brings along a lot of usability changes for KB/M users that killed nearly all complaints about it. If your human inability to change gets the best of you, and you're about to start crying in a pathetic mess, then there's always start menu replacement tools available.

Soldered to the motherboard? It would have to be some obscure mobo form factor then. I hope they're not using a mobile CPU.

It's a gaming PC that can play games with reasonable details at 1080p with a decent framerate. It's superior to consoles, let's be happy about that.

Remember what the Valve Steambox looked liked? Out of all of the Steamboxes including this one, it looks the best. like it belongs in the living room. I'm not really a fan of Alienware, overpriced hardware and that Alien head doesn't appeal to me as it did when I was 15.
