Night Security LTT Expo

Morphas1s
  • 1 month later...

A valid and serious question, chuckles...Not everyone finds potential victimization humorous...Probably wants to know if his PC needs tore down every night, or some "funny" person will come along and be malicious...Would someone be around to prevent this, or do something about it should something "funny" happen....best advice I can think of, is, If you don't put yourself in a predicament, you know you don't have to worry about it...regardless of the situation you're referencing.....as you can clearly see, not everyone finds security a serious topic

Thx @Tristerin, that's basically what I was getting at.  Bujinkan seems to've assumed OP is just asking if they should expect to be safe during the WHALE, but what was asked was much more specific.  As someone who's been working the security field for something like 8yrs now, I can tell you that we find such specific questions coming from potential attendees amusing at best, & otherwise suspicious, & certainly not answered with usable specifics.

@Bujinkan & @Morphas1s  I apologize if I came across as flippant or dismissively amused but, in all seriousness, LMG would be very foolish to discuss what "kind of over night security" to expect at the event with the public, which is what doing so here on the forum would be.  Thus, don't hold your breath for a response from staff on the subject, let alone a detailed one.  I believe they're smarter than that.

@tbeau123 I agree the food thread is important & it's definitely frustrating that it's gone unanswered thus far.  However, maybe it's cuz they haven't gotten such details ironed out. -shrugs-

Presuming LTT does opt for security, they would likely be limited to Genesis Security Group as that's the company the venue uses.

There's a very thick line between telling show goers what their security detail will be and what they'll be doing, vs simply telling them that yes, there will be security and your items will be safe. Suggesting that saying they will have security would put any said security plans at risk is ridiculous.

I think @LinusTech briefly mentioned something about this on one of the WAN shows (obviously not detailed). but I don't recall what it was.

I'd just take the most expensive parts of my computer back to my hotel or home if I was local.  No matter what security is offered, nothing is perfect and a big room full of PCs after hours is a tempting target even if someone just slips 'one thing away' in such a fashion that no one notices till that individual returns in the morning to find it gone.

Desktop: Ryzen 9 3950X, Asus TUF Gaming X570-Plus, 64GB DDR4, MSI RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio, Creative Sound Blaster AE-7

Kensington locks... get one. It'll make your system less attractive than the one next to it.

Yes, that would be ridiculous.  "What kind of security...." seemed, at least to me, a query for more details than just "Will there be security?"

I didn't read it as that at all. I read it as:

  • Will there be a guard at the door, or someone overlooking the PCs?
  • Will the room with the PCs be locked when not in use?

Very simple answers that in no way jeopardize anything.

What's kind of over night security will there be at Whale LAN?

Very simple answers that in no way jeopardize anything.

Here’s some info regarding security at LTX:

  • The expo will have security for the expo and during LAN-only hours.
  • The LAN area is limited to LAN attendees only to help reduce traffic.
  • We'll have a process for marking larger items (laptops, desktops, monitors, etc.) so ensure that people enter & leave with their own equipment.

We recommend you take the same precautions as any BYOC/LAN event:

  • Don't leave small, loose items unattended.
  • Make use of Kensington Locks (or other types) to lock items to your desk if you think it's necessary.

That being said, for any event like a BYOC there is always a risk when bringing your own gear and LTX is not responsible for any lost, broken, or stolen items.

Hope this helps!

They have the area fenced off and big burley guys that look like they are from the mob guarding it.

There will also be a short man with a beard and a few million youtube subscribers ready to put you on blast on wan show if you get caught stealing ram sticks.
