what to buy 7900 xtx vs 4080

DCLucifer

hey guys girls,

sooo i bought a new computer recently

corsair d1000 airflow

ryzen 7  5800x3d

64 gb ram 3600 cl 32

and a 6900 xt

I am seriously considering buying an upgrade for my gpu as it still feels lacking in some 1440p ultra games and 1440p ultra wide

soo in my country both a 4080 and 7900 xtx are around the same price (maybe 100 $ apart )
what would you guys recommend me upgrading to.

i dont  really care about raytracing but hey everyone probably wants to play minecraft rtx at least ones

Genuine advice? Stop playing on Ultra/max settings. Balance the settings properly and you will gain a ton of performance without losing much visuals.

Also use PBO2 Tuner and do a -20 all core, test to see stability, try -25, then finally -30. You can do a mix and match and your 5800x3D will have a stable 4450mhz clock.

Other then that? It honestly does not make sense for you to upgrade from a 6900xt to a 7900XTX or 4080. The performance increase for you isnt there, 4080/4090 are 4k Gaming cards, 1440p its not enough of an upgrade over what you have to warrant it.

honestly yea i dont need it for1440p but for ultrawide i do tend to need a bit more horse power in some games

and my friend would like to buy my gpu which is the main reason im looking for an alternative.

even if i turn down my specs in ultrawide i have a hard time hitting 100+ fps which id like to reach if i can and i dont mind blowing a bit more money on my rig

Well an RTX 4080 is 34% faster than your 6900 XT and a 7900 XTX is 37% faster than your 6900 XT at 2560 x 1440.

Both cards will most likely have that extra grunt to satisfy your needs at Ultrawide resolution.

Since both cards are very similar performance wise, it most likely comes down to price and what features you need. Also, what software suite you prefer. Being that you are already on a 6900 XT; it might make more sense to go with a 7900 XTX since you are already familiarized with AMD Radeon software. I recommend going with a non-reference 7900 XTX though, there seems to be some issues right now with the reference design.

Good luck finding a 7900 XTX. Been looking for a decent priced one for a couple of weeks, but is dead silence in EU.

Honestly, go with a 4080. They are in stock (nobody wants them) and possibly even get a sale deals already. Or get a 7900XT. Same core, only 4GB less ram. Also, going on sale already. You may be facing a smaller return when pushing the XT to second hand market, but you are more guaranteed to get a sale. When a 4080 needs a new PSU and is prone to meting he power connector... those facts limit its resale value.

If you have a 5800x3d and an msi board with kombo strike. If not Pbo tunner is your best friend.

The 6900xt really dosent need to be changed, specially at 1440p, if you had a 4k monitor maybe. Just lower some settings and the RT games just use FSR . I have a 6800xt and its great at 1440p. Been 2 year already with it.

I would genuinely skip one more generation before replacing a RX 6900XT - AMD 7000s series has been a personal disappointment and RTX 4080 is the kind of product nobody should support in order to reality shock nVidia.

Seriously, do like stated just go easier on the settings, I understand the joy of maxing every setting and play on full eye candy but it isn't worth the hassle here.

Now if you insist on doing so, it really falls down to how much you care about Ray Tracing, that is the only meaningful difference between the XTX and 4080 and when you're playing 1k+ going an extra 100~200 bucks shouldn't matter.

No need to upgrade, just lower the settings
