why can’t this be me smh my head

i want one so bad but the prices are fucking ludicrous even today.

I nabbed a 6 core (16gb RAM) dual D500 version from eBay for 250$

There is a 4 core 12GB version for sale local to me to 200$

I upgraded mine to the best CPU for it for 50$ 12 cores, 24 threads.

Compared to my main rig, it's almost even but the MacOS is so much more smooth and well put together that there's really no contest. And I say this as a lifelong PC/Windows person....who will be dumping Windows in July of 2023, when Windows 9 goes out of support.

This contest will last 7 days and end at 10am CST on 11/02/2022. Note, this will be the honor system and it has to be your MAIN rig, not your old one your father, daughter, sister, brother, nephew is using etc.

I just saw a guy with an I5 2310 post a troubleshooting post on the forums which REALLY brought me back to my high school days. A pc with an I5 2300 was my first "real" pc that I asked for my junior year of highschool for Christmas (2012) I didn't really get expensive gifts from my parents/santa as a kid so I had to pay for part of it myself. Here was the rig: https://www.newegg.com/lenovo-ideacentre-k330-student-home-office/p/N82E16883108555

I5 2300

Nvidia GT 420

Crappy OEM case/mobo/PSU

My parents picked it up from a brick and mortar tigerdirect store. I still remember back in the day even though it didn't have an SSD it was like magic using that 7200rpm HDD/fast quad core cpu/dedicated GPU. Before that, the best system I ever had was a crappy $400 laptop that I purchased with my Middle School graduation money. I used the integrated graphics for years to play not very demanding games. Back then I played more on consoles and was actually extremely good at FPS games on my Xbox 360. I wanted the pc to play games that weren't offered on console (some MMO's etc.)

I made some upgrades to it over the years. When I left for college a few years later in the summer between hs/college (2014) I threw in a Toshiba OCZ Vector 120gb SATA SSD in there. Oh boy, everyone remembers their first experience using an SSD for an OS drive, it was like literal magic. Then the following summer I used the money I got selling my textbooks (my parents didn't know/didn't care/didn't ask apparently) to buy an Sapphire Radeon R9 270 2gb off ebay. Idk what the best nvidia card was at the time but this AMD card was way cheaper than the equivalent. Like it was crazy how cheap it was, I think like literally $100 bucks or something. I also threw in a corsair CX 450 psu as the integrated one didn't even have PCIE cables. Obviously the experience got drastically better with the upgraded GPU. I then used that rig in it's final form for a year and a half or so before finally I got an insane deal on an I5 4590/32gb ram custom rig. It didn't have a gpu but I think I literally paid like $150 bucks for the whole goshdarn thing. It wasn't the newest stuff at the time but still a drastic upgrade. It was so bonkers I think I actually made money selling my old I5 2300 rig on ebay compared to what I paid for my I5 4590 custom rig. It reeked of the devil lettuce but whatever lol, it was so cheap. I then threw a 1070 in there and called it a day for a year or so before I took the plunge and built my own custom rig from the ground up with a 6700k. The bug bit me big time and I have built and sold like 50-75 rigs since then. Rigs I have used PERSONALLY over the past 10 years

I5 2300

I5 4590

I7 6700k

I7 7700k

Ryzen 2600

I7 8700k

Ryzen 3700x

Ryzen 5800x

I5 12600k

Ryzen 7700x (Current)

Man what a ride it's been. I am probably at a slight net gain overall from all the building. If you would have asked me before GPU shortage circa 2020, I would have been far in the red. I am not ashamed to admit I did make a massive profit on some (4-5) gpus sold to miner's in 2020/2021. I wasn't a "scalper" but if I stopped by Microcenter and a 3080 was available, you bet your ass I was buying it.

Anyway's now that I have told you my story of my old ass first rig, who is currently running the OLDEST rig as their main rig. We will base this off of the year your CPU came out. I am curious to see what toasters will come out of the fray. Maybe one of you is rolling with my old lenovo prebuilt and has tricked up that I5 2300 to a 2500k and is running a 3080 in there or something, who knows?

I have a computer with a 2005 intel core duo and I also have a desktop with a old AMD althon CPU. I also have a old Mac GPU from 2000. So not my main rig. But old as hell.

Dang, I retired my 3570K only a few months ago. I suppose a laptop that's only used occasionally doesn't qualify as a main rig? Otherwise I could offer up a laptop with an i5 M560 😄

Seriously, next time you need to upgrade grab a 10th gen system on the cheap and a 6000 series GPU (should be a 400 series mobo for best compatibility as 10th gen plus z490 systems are easiest to hackintosh, and the 6700xt isn’t supported) and follow the OpenCore guide from Dortania.

eh, depends on the boot loader used. Clover is hot garbage, same with distros like Olarila, Unibeast, and Multibeast. Opencore is THE only hackintosh solution. It’s pretty easy if you know your way around a command line.

My oldest still in operation is a Lenovo T530 that I got in September 2012. I'm writing this post on it, as a matter of fact. She's running an i7-3820QM. I'm currently building/testing/troubleshooting/abouttothrowintheriver a new rig, so this one will probably be retired or moved into some secondary use by the end of the year. I have done some upgrades over the years: 16gb of ram upgrade shortly after purchase because god to manufacturers charge through the nose for it (Lenovo wanted $400, I got it for $120), 500GB msata drive in the vacant WAN slot, and I took the disc drive out and mounted a 1TB SSD in there via adapter (this thing is rocking nearly 2TB of SSD storage internally). She's been good to me. It's hooked up to my 34inch ultrawide here.

I have a Lenovo W510 with some minor issues, but still running 🙂. Recently installed linux on it with BSPWM as the windo manager for a minimal config. Thinking of turning it into a server. It has got a really cool build where the keyboard can be removed by just sliding it forward to access internals.

It has an intel i7 720QM lol, really ancient.

My daily desktop is a 2009 Mac Pro. Well, I actually have 2 of them, the main one runs Windows 10, and the other runs MacOS which just gets used for Garageband.

I bought the second one to just use the case, but it turns out dual quad core Xeon E5520s, 16GB RAM, and a GT120 is more than powerful enough.

Shame about 250W idle power draw though! With these energy prices it costs over £2 a day just to have it switched on!

I tried switching to using my laptop as a desktop replacement by connecting it up to both my monitors, but unfortunately because of Windows 11 bugs every time it woke up from sleep it would re-enable the internal monitor and screw everything up, so I'd have to open the laptop and close it again for it to work!

I was dailying a FX-6300 up until a month ago. Got an old Acer Travelmate 4102 that I just use for music in my room.

The FX-6300 has since been shoved into an old A-Open QF50 case from the early 2000s. Yes it fits in there, Hyper 212 EVO with dual fans and an old HD 4870 I found.

It's the only photo I have of it. But I needed to show friends that my Dell tube monitor finally kicked the bucket and I got a flat screen.
SzseV6Rb.jpg
My computer is 11 years old HP. If ya want to know more info about it, here's the link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03349236

As for anything else about it, it's your basic of basic computer. It was bought from Walmart long ago on a major clearance rack in the backroom. Had a choice of this one or Dell, and we've had bad experiences with Dell and nothing but good with HP, so I chose the HP one. The whole thing is still original other then the hard drive which died a few years ago. Friend bought me a new 2 tb one. The speakers came with the tower, as well as a keyboard that I still use, and a mouse to which died and I've since replaced. I've had maybe 5 computers before. 3 died due to viruses (or so we were told), 1 started on fire because it had in-case LEDs and I unplugged them because they were flickering one day. Though, I guess I missed one which started the computer on fire, and my very first tower pc died of old age. The motherboard kicked the bucket, it was a Hewlett Packard Bell, bought brand new ages ago. All the others were piece together by some computer guy we use to go to.

But yes, this is my daily computer. My only computer. I would so love to be able to upgrade and actually get something that works. This computer was the best one I've had. I mainly use it for art and playing Minecraft. However, to doesn't have any power whatsoever to do anything else but those things. It has a hard time even running newer versions of Minecraft without stuttering or crashing. And lately it's been white screening and black screening a lot. Not too sure what is wrong with it. I'm sure it's showing it's age and dying as well. But I still won't give up on it.

Over the lest few years my PC has had a lot of changes, 3 boards/CPUs (4 CPUs actually but one was a direct replacement).

Upto about 5 years ago I was running this;

Gigabyte GA-M68M-S2P

AMD Phenom 9650 @2.3GHz (my original died, so I picked up a replacement for about 4 pound form eBay, bargain)

4GB Crucial DDR2

GT610 later replaced by a GT630

Coolermaster case (can't tell you what model, it was ATX and small)

Some dodgy ancient PSU what have no PCI power connectors

80 or 120GB GB HDD which died a around the time of the upgrade to the below

320GB HDD (still in use)

The below replaced it, I got the board and CPU dirt cheap and a friend put it together for me (still was still my main rig until about 16 months ago);

HP 612500-001

i5 650 @3.2Ghz

4x2GB Corsair 1600Mhz DDR3

GT630 (There was a Wish GPU that went into this on it's first build, which caught fire, and it had to be retired, along with the PSU)

Fractal Design Define 4 (I think)

500W Thermatake PSU

Adata 120GB SSD (this was the first time I had an SSD)

This machine is now my backup machine running Windows7 for playing older games, along with a new SSD and an old HDD, an RX460, all in a Cit F3 case which is being changed abit

My current rig is;

Biostar TA970

AMD FX8350 @ 4Ghz

2 x 4GB Samsung DDR3 1800Mhz

1 x 8GB luckbestfastmemory DDR3 1800Mhz

GTX960 2GB

Same case, PSU, additional 240GB SSD, 1 TB HDD

I have a few pics of the builds and parts below.

I have found the sweet spot is to upgrade your CPU every two gens. Not two years, two gens. So like Ryzen 2700x to 5800x etc. Or 8700k to 12700k. If you wait any longer than that your old cpu isn't going to be worth squat if you resell it

Basically what I've found too. Every 2 gens approximates to about every 4 years and so far that seems to be the sweet spot

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

I can't do this. If I upgrade, then I have old parts. The old parts eventually turn into more computers. Then, I add the more computers to my network. Then, I end up with too many computers.

I tend to build something and run it until it's genuinely not useful anymore. My old Xeon machine, for example, doesn't have enough PCIE lanes for a GPU and 10GBE. So, my upgrade to 10GBE is going to end the usefulness of that machine and I will recycle it. Or struggle to. It still runs just fine, so I keep trying to find a new use for it, but realistically, I could replace it with a Minisforum HX90G and have an all around more capable computer. In fact, if I did DAS, the HX90G, with built in 2.5GBE, would be able to replace the old Xeon box, and with DAS, act as a storage vault. Pretty sure i could even do transcode and manage my youtube channel from it.

I've had my current main PC since May 2012, actually the only PC I have ever bought brand new. I had saved up money for years from birthdays, namedays, Christmas, etc. and decided to buy a PC. But of course back then I didn't know much about PCs (I was 13 years old), I had only used two PCs - one with Celeron 433MHz and another with AMD Sempron 2500+ 1.75GHz (on ASUS A7N8X-E) and only knew 98SE and XP, had tired Vista, but only very little. So seeing this pre-built Acer Aspire M1930 and it's specs I was very impressed, I mean it had a dual-core CPU at 2.4GHz, a whole 4GB RAM, a GPU with 2GB VRAM and even a 1TB HDD. I thought that's extremely fast (until then I had used the family PC with AMD Sempron 2500+ 1.75GHz, 1GB DDR, ATi Radeon A9550 128MB AGP and Seagate 80GB IDE HDD). I even bough a widescreen monitor (Samsung S19B300). I was very happy with it.

Originally it had (of course in the original Acer case):

Motherboard: Acer IPSIB-CH

CPU: Intel Celeron G530 2.4GHz

RAM: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon HD7470 2GB

HDD: Seagate 1TB HDD

PSU: FSP Group 250W

Ec0QsZq.jpg7Spiflo.jpg

For my birthday the next year I asked for more RAM and my parents bought me one 4GB DDR3 1333MHz stick, so I had 8GB in dual-channel. Used the PC in this configuration for 3 years.

In June 2016 I bought a second-hand i5 2320 to upgrade from the Celeron. Now the issue with games was the weak GPU especially since I had bought a new 1080p 22" monitor in February 2016 (Samsung S22D300HY). So I decided to buy a better GPU and was going for a GTX 750 Ti, but decided to wait a few months.

In the end of October ordered a new case (CoolerMaster Silencio 352M) and PSU (CoolerMaster B500 v2 500W) and they arrived in the begging of November. End of November finally ordered the new GPU (PowerColor AMD Radeon RX460 4GB Red Dragon v2) and it arrived 1st of December. I was very happy, I could play GTA V smoothly for the first time.

I don't remember when exactly, but sometime in 2017 I added a second HDD (Seagate 500GB) which has second-hand and given to me for free by my dad.

In May 2018 I bought an i7 2600s to upgrade the i5. In September 2018 I added a SSD for the OS (SanDisk Z410 120GB) that I bough back in November 2016, but used in laptops. When I added the SSD I copied the OS install from the HDD to the SSD, also changed the 1TB HDD with a different one (WD Blue 1TB).

January 2018 I swapped the PSU (Seasonic M12II-520 EVO 520W) and changed the 500GB HDD (Seagate 1TB HDD). Have not upgraded the PC since, except adding an USB 3.0 card so I could properly use the front USB 3.0 ports the case has (used to use USB 3.0 header to USB 2.0 header cable). In October 2018 I did buy a new monitor, again 22" 1080p, but this time it's IPS not TN (Acer SA220Q).

Current specs are:

Motherborad: Acer IPISB-CH

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600s 2.8GHz

RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz (running at 1333MHz, 2x8GB sticks)

GPU: PowerColor AMD Radeon RX460 4GB Red Dragon v2

SSD: SanDisk Z410 120GB

HDD1: WesternDigital Blue 1TB

HDD2: Seagate Barracuda 1TB

PSU: Seasonic M12II-520 EVO 520W (fully modular)

Case: CoolerMaster Silencio 352M

OS: Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64 BG (installed it the day I bought the PC back in May 2012 and still using the same install, though copied over to the SSD)

And up-to-date pictures of the PC (the inside of the PC has not been properly cleaned since putting it in this case 6 years ago):

Honestly the only thing I could think of upgrading currently is the GPU since it barely runs Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p and lower resolutions look bad, but for a single game I don't thing it's worth it, since newer games don't run on Windows 7 sadly (would really like to be able to play the new Saints Row) and I refuse to change to a newer Windows. I do have a more powerful PC for newer games, but I rarely use it.

If my first computer wasn't taken to be used as an office computer I would still be on an acer prebuilt from 2005 lol.

My computer is quite new though so, good luck.

Unless I can enter my original Xbox I still play
