Who is running the oldest rig? Let's have a contest. Winner gets a $10 Steam card from me!

Deadpool2onBlu-Ray

This contest will last 7 days and end at 10am CST on 11/02/2022. Note, this will be the honor system and it has to be your MAIN rig, not your old one your father, daughter, sister, brother, nephew is using etc.

I just saw a guy with an I5 2310 post a troubleshooting post on the forums which REALLY brought me back to my high school days. A pc with an I5 2300 was my first "real" pc that I asked for my junior year of highschool for Christmas (2012) I didn't really get expensive gifts from my parents/santa as a kid so I had to pay for part of it myself. Here was the rig: https://www.newegg.com/lenovo-ideacentre-k330-student-home-office/p/N82E16883108555

I5 2300

Nvidia GT 420

Crappy OEM case/mobo/PSU

My parents picked it up from a brick and mortar tigerdirect store. I still remember back in the day even though it didn't have an SSD it was like magic using that 7200rpm HDD/fast quad core cpu/dedicated GPU. Before that, the best system I ever had was a crappy $400 laptop that I purchased with my Middle School graduation money. I used the integrated graphics for years to play not very demanding games. Back then I played more on consoles and was actually extremely good at FPS games on my Xbox 360. I wanted the pc to play games that weren't offered on console (some MMO's etc.)

I made some upgrades to it over the years. When I left for college a few years later in the summer between hs/college (2014) I threw in a Toshiba OCZ Vector 120gb SATA SSD in there. Oh boy, everyone remembers their first experience using an SSD for an OS drive, it was like literal magic. Then the following summer I used the money I got selling my textbooks (my parents didn't know/didn't care/didn't ask apparently) to buy an Sapphire Radeon R9 270 2gb off ebay. Idk what the best nvidia card was at the time but this AMD card was way cheaper than the equivalent. Like it was crazy how cheap it was, I think like literally $100 bucks or something. I also threw in a corsair CX 450 psu as the integrated one didn't even have PCIE cables. Obviously the experience got drastically better with the upgraded GPU. I then used that rig in it's final form for a year and a half or so before finally I got an insane deal on an I5 4590/32gb ram custom rig. It didn't have a gpu but I think I literally paid like $150 bucks for the whole goshdarn thing. It wasn't the newest stuff at the time but still a drastic upgrade. It was so bonkers I think I actually made money selling my old I5 2300 rig on ebay compared to what I paid for my I5 4590 custom rig. It reeked of the devil lettuce but whatever lol, it was so cheap. I then threw a 1070 in there and called it a day for a year or so before I took the plunge and built my own custom rig from the ground up with a 6700k. The bug bit me big time and I have built and sold like 50-75 rigs since then. Rigs I have used PERSONALLY over the past 10 years

I5 2300

I5 4590

I7 6700k

I7 7700k

Ryzen 2600

I7 8700k

Ryzen 3700x

Ryzen 5800x

I5 12600k

Ryzen 7700x (Current)

Man what a ride it's been. I am probably at a slight net gain overall from all the building. If you would have asked me before GPU shortage circa 2020, I would have been far in the red. I am not ashamed to admit I did make a massive profit on some (4-5) gpus sold to miner's in 2020/2021. I wasn't a "scalper" but if I stopped by Microcenter and a 3080 was available, you bet your ass I was buying it.

Anyway's now that I have told you my story of my old ass first rig, who is currently running the OLDEST rig as their main rig. We will base this off of the year your CPU came out. I am curious to see what toasters will come out of the fray. Maybe one of you is rolling with my old lenovo prebuilt and has tricked up that I5 2300 to a 2500k and is running a 3080 in there or something, who knows?

Yeah, but like my build was Xeon 1230v2 + 1060 3GB and I could still play recent games at 1080p. Only in 2021-2022 it started to feel like it's getting CPU limited.

I thought someone on here the other day was asking for help on a Core 2 Duo E6550 system, which would put it around 2007. Can't remember the thread, though.

My daughter is daily driving my old i5 2xxx series processor with a 1080ti shoved in it, but per the rules, this is obviously not officially submittable.

I generally don't let my main rig age more than ~5 years if I can help it.

I have found the sweet spot is to upgrade your CPU every two gens. Not two years, two gens. So like Ryzen 2700x to 5800x etc. Or 8700k to 12700k. If you wait any longer than that your old cpu isn't going to be worth squat if you resell it

That's not a bad idea, but I don't resell mine.   They usually get turned into projects.  For instance, my current rig will probably go to my daughter, and her computer will get turned into a NAS/Plex server.

I use a Pentium 4 Windows ME system daily. It's my most frequently used machine and the most critical to me personally and professionally. It has to work 24/7. But it's a workstation and not used as a general purpose PC so It doesn't qualify.

I also use a much more modern Dual Opteron Windows XP machine daily, but that's also a workstation.

They're not that slow, just quite inefficient. Heck, the dual X5650s in one of my servers are still very powerful CPUs (and very power hungry...)

Nice!

My oldest daily use is an Athlon 64 x2 6000+, a few years newer.

Offtopic on my part, excuse me / also a pun.

I prefer Artcic P12s - 5 in a box 25€

Fan's are a one time investment though. The T30 and Noctua A12x25 are rated for what? 200000 hours? That's 22 years of being on 24 hours a day.

Buy once cry once.

My main rig is a Dual Ivy Bridge Xeon workstation e5-2643v2 with 512GB ECC Registered DDR3 RAM, 10 drives, a mix of SSD, m.2 nVME, m.2 SATA, SAS and standard SATA drives, plus an AMD Radeon Pro WX 7100 8GB card.

Does everything I need it to, and then some (and it games just fine...)

Also have a 2013 Mac Pro that is simply wonderful, but it's not my main rig (yet...)

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.
