How common are panel defects e.g. dead/stuck pixels?

PopsicleHustler

Hey. Since I'm without a monitor (again), I want to have a discussion with you lads. Maybe it will make myself feel a bit better.

My experience so far has been quite disastrous.

First ever high end monitor I've bought for myself had a vertical line of dead pixels. I don't remember the model, but it was Alienware 34" Ultrawide 1080p. Costed around 750ish euros on Ebay. Thankfully I've been able to return it and get a refund straight away.

Next I bought LG monitor with the same spec. 34 inch, 1080p ultrawide, gsync the whole lot. Used it for a few years. Not a single issue. When selling it, it has no faulty pixels, uniform back-light, no BLB. Basically looked and worked like brand new.

Then I bought Gygabite M34WQ. Lovely budget monitor. IPS, 1440p Ultrawide, Gsync compatible. 10 months in, a vertical line of messed up pixels out of nowhere. For over I month now I'm waiting to hear from Gygabite about what's going on. They replacing it, repairing or what the hell...

Now I decided, alright, I have a good job now, can afford some expensive toys. Went out and bought LG Ultragear 38GN950-B. One of the best ultrawides money can buy. 38 inches, basically 4k, just cut down on top and bottom. Amazing colors, brightness, almost no blb. My eyes were happy.

2 weeks in - stuck pixel. Red dot on grey/black background.  I'm devastated. Seller (Caseking.de) gave me a free return label. Sent it off today.

My Gygabite monitor went through the same procedure. I contacted the seller, they gave me a return label, but then told.me they'll be sending it to a manufacturer because there is nothing they can do.

I'm HOPING for a replacement or straight refund now because I've reported the issue less than 30 days after purchasing the monitor. So MAYBE they will take it and issue a refund. But I don't get my hopes up...

Whats your horror stories (if any) with monitor purchases. If you have any good one, post them too!

I've used everything from a Chimea 22" monitor to my AOC AGON 35" UW to cheap shit I bought on Facebook Marketplace.  I've never had a stuck pixel or dead pixel.

I don't think they're common at all, I think you're very unlucky in this.

i dont think i've ever seen a dead/stuck pixel besides two cases where 'percussion' happened, and was the cause of the issue.

but then again, i tend to buy/use business grade stuff. i suppose the GAMING brands just fly closer to the sun.

Oh for sure they push those panels to the limit and have very little margin so basically if it's working 90% right it goes out the door.

I've had an MSI 27' 1440 144Hz panel that came with dead pixels across panel...took about 3 returns & exchanges before I finally got a good panel.

I sold this off and used the money for my current 34" ultrawide and must say I had terrible ghosting with the 1st panel. Return & exchange for 2nd panel and all has been good after tweaking some settings to make it manageable.

You joke but that is basically the requirement. Just look at the samsung odessey curved lineup. The backlight bleed is so disastrous on quite a few models you can see it even on light colors. A ton have vertical line issues and image distortion. But the review units don't :p.

That is until they get a random one from the store put em side by side and they might as well be a different monitor if you get unlucky enough.

My friend used to work at our most popular electronics store and the g9 and g7 came back nonstop some were sold as 2nd chance units over 10 times because they worked fine but the display quality was AWFUL. It took him 9 g9's before he got a good one without visual issues and technical issues and it's been a solid screen for 2 years now.

When I move from CRT to first LCD monitor back in 2005 it had two dead pixels, one eventually fixed itself while the other one remained. That time the policy was 6 dead pixels for return.

Ever since I don't see dead pixels from several monitor swaps (maybe 8-10 monitors later), until recently I got partially scammed from second hand monitor that had stuck red pixel on Dell S2719dgf. I could make it appear and disappear when tapping gently on the screen so it didn't bother me, but now since I replaced my side monitor it's currently in storage.

Last year when I swapped AOC CU34G2X to LG 34GN850 it had two noticeable dust inside, exchanged once and it's perfect. I'm still using it today now at 11 months of age.

My friend now has several dead pixels on LG CX after two years of usage, since it's near the edge he decided to keep using it but currently worried it may spread out more.

I'm still shocked how unlucky you were as it shouldn't happen in the first place, and now you know no brand is perfect. People usually have no issues with monitors so one day your luck will come.

I'm considering trying Alienware again just for the sake of it, given I get a refund that is. I might get a replacement with no defects and live happily ever after

my first monitor that i went to the physical store for had dead pixels, i think they deliberately sold me a defective unit so i dont even know if that counts. The other one was a 700dollar graphics monitor in 2011 (?) that i bought for 80 bucks knowing that it has 2 dead pixels.

You are getting a bit unlucky and there also seems to be higher chance with certain models.
