Have you cut the cord?

abhay6547

So I recently cancelled my internet, cable, and home phone service with one provider and they need one month's notice before they actually stop the service. I was debating whether I should pay for cable TV again or not because of how rarely I watch TV. I just watch almost everything online anyway. Have any of you guys cut the cord on cable and if so, leave what you've done down below.

I've got tv from my internet provider through broadband. It's nice to be able to watch the news in the morning.

I watch live sporting events and I'm not fused with streaming sites or dodgy internet.

Its the only reason I keep sky.

I should note I may reconsider once I travel to korea.

Some of the things I would miss are things like news channels like mentioned. I can get the local news (not in HD though) but other channels would be missing. Plus, the thing about TV is that you don't always KNOW what you want to watch so when you're just flipping through the channels, you might land on something that's really interesting and that you would never have thought to watch otherwise- if this makes sense to you guys.

There's no reason to watch TV, with all the adverts and inflexible schedules it's more of a hassle trying to catch your shows than it's worth. Anything that anyone likes will be uploaded to the net only a few days after it airs and it's there for you to watch when it's convenient for you. You guys realize that a half hour show is only about 20 minutes right? that's 10 minutes of adverts. A third of a shows time slot is dedicated to ads and you're paying for that crap. Regardless of what people think there aren't any adds on any decent torrent of your favorite show and even paid services like Netflix are infinitely better than actual TV because of the lack of adverts, the only problem with Netflix is the slow rate at which they add new content and don't suggest Hulu, it's garbage because you pay the same amount you would for Netflix bu you have to sit through adverts so fuck that garbage.

Looking at possibly cord cutting, figuring the logistics. I cant get very fast Internet where I live, so currently satellite (no cable here) is the most effective way to get content. Also in Canada we don't have all the options the US does, VPNs are a round about way of getting access to some services.

The real issue with me is the deteriorating value I get from satellite. The cost is increasing faster than inflation and the content providers (channels) are providing worse content. My satellite service provider has been adding channels to my package, probably to justify the increasing costs, but it doesn't add any real value to me.

Streaming isnt a real possiblity right now for me, as ISPs in my area provide spotty service with dubious claims regarding speed. I wish iTunes still rented tv shows. Right now I could save a little bit of money by buying all the content I watch.

Coming from watching broadcast television, advertising is not a big deal for me, except repetitive or inappropriately annoying ones.

I buy all my TV series off itunes or amazon. So basically I bought GOT and BB.  My siblings have a TV antenna they put to there laptops, watched a bit of castle on that but our house has never had a real 'TV' and thank fuck for that.

Yep.. Gotta love how popular that is here in Denmark.

It's quite sickening as a user who literally never watches TV.

All I want is fast fiber, but too bad that fiber (or even fast speeds (talking about upload too)) is a rarity right now.

Now that I have the equivalent of an HTPC in my former, stripped down XPS 8500, I've been thinking about this as well. I haven't really looked into this and it shows, now that I realize how much money I've wasted on cable and how much I've been shat on by my service provider.

I like to follow my hockey and watch the occasional movie but Shaw is making it super hard to watch movies now. 5 years ago I could have all the channels I wanted, now I have 0 movie channels; outside of CBC, Global and CTV (the usual gang, complete garbage mainstream news agencies, I just go surf Reuters instead) Shaw is intent on forcing garbage like CNN, Fox and Showtime down all its suscribers' throats.

What's a good subscription that lets me watch movies and follow sports?

I have not cut the cord because i don't pay for tv but i myself have basically moved over to the internet for my tv. I stopped using a cable box in November and have not even had my tv hooked up to cable since then. A few shows i do still watch just not in my room. I have replaced cable with youtube, hulu, netflix, revison3, twit the tv shows i tend to watch i could get away with just over the air with little problem.

Is there no free TV service you can get? In the UK we have Freeview and Freesat - as long as you have a TV licence and a satellite dish/aerial you can watch about 200 channels (there are only 20 decent ones) absolutely free. My family has never paid for Sky or another TV subscription service.

I only watch the TV when there's an interesting documentary on. The rest of the time I'll just watch programmes on BBC iPlayer etc if I want to watch them.

Don't know how it works in the US, but at least keep your TV licence so you can watch live TV online if you want to.

EDIT: Sorry just saw you're in Canada. Guess the same points still stand :)

Ah, that sucks. I guess that's the only option if you want to keep some channels without paying anything :/ But if you're still unsure you could cancel the service for a month or two, see how you go, and if you feel like you need it back you can always sign up again :)
