A potential successor to the Award-winning Sony WH-1000XM4 seems to have shown up in a recent FCC filing titled 'Y2954' (via thewalkmanblog). While the document doesn't mention the XM5 by name, there's speculation 'Y2954' is a codename for the XM5. If that's true, it looks like the XM5 could be getting a couple of tweaks... Firstly, the mysterious new cans have an internal battery rating of 3.8V, up from 3.7V on the WH-1000XM4. That could mean the XM5 will offer better battery life than the current model. Secondly, the addition of 5V/9V charging suggests the XM5 could support faster charging. A slight redesign could also be on the cards. The rudimentary drawing (above) points to Sony moving the FCC certification label from the headband to the left earcup. This could mean the XM5 will sport a metal headband, rather than plastic.

My thoughts

From the design I thought tis would be the ring design that sony recently announced, but if that's the case how do you noise cancel it? It's either that or it's just a revision of the XM4

Pretty sure that's not at all what the image is showing. Even in the description it just says they're moving where the FCC label goes.

I'm curious to see their new earbuds if they'll release it this year.

I really like my MX3 headphones, but the MX4 were kind of a disappointing version. They barely changed anything about them even though they should have.

Let's hope the XM5 actually implements proper multi-device support (not the janky 2 device support in the XM4) and let's hope they also support Bluetooth LE Audio.

Honestly, I've seen no real reason to upgrade from my XM2s yet. Every generation is just an incremental upgrade in noise cancellation, battery life etc. The only 'big' feature that makes me want to upgrade is USB-C, just to get rid of the last device in my life that uses it, but I can't justify spending £300 on a USB port.

Maybe by the XM5s those generations of incremental upgrades will amount to a somewhat meaningful difference, but I have my doubts.

I've now been using my Sony WH-1000XM4 for a over a year now and I love them a lot. If Sony brings major Upgrades to the XM5s like improved Noise Cancelling and being able to connect to more than two Devices at once via Bluetooth then I might consider upgrading. If not then I'll stay on the XM4s.

You can take a look at all of the Tech that I own and have owned over the years in my About Me section and on my Profile.

I'm Swiss and my Mother language is Swiss German of course, I speak the Aargauer dialect. If you want to watch a great video about Swiss German which explains the language and outlines the Basics, then click here.

If I could just play Videogames and consume Cool Content all day long for the rest of my life, then that would be sick.

Why upgrade if you feel the upgrade isn't actually big, but just nice to have?

Keeping older ones until it breaks or degrades somehow, is better for the environment, and if you don't care about that, it's also better for your wallet.

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.
It matters that you don't just give up.”

It's not like you throw them away, you resell them.

Still better for your wallet to not buy new ones.
