Not 2, that would be a love triangle.

 

If it's 2 guys and 2 girls it's a love quadrangle.

 

If it's asymmetric with 4 or more participants it's a harem or reverse harem.

 

However a true harem requires reciprocity.

Yeah ok true, but one could arguably say that a Love triangle a type of harem, don't they pretty much go into the same Category of "multiple love interests"?

@zappian @CatCloud @That Norwegian Guy I think anything more than a Love Triangle is referred to as a Love Polygon I've seen sites with these tags.

any vague ideas as to why so many mech anime not in space has a stranded-on-island sequence, it just hit me today, i was like "wait i've seen this at least 3 different times before"

The cynical side of me thinks it's just because it's easier to alter the narrative that way. It's a "get out of jail free" card... you're essentially free to reset the plot and focus on what you think is most popular and successful, while filtering out the rest. It likewise lets you remould the MC and/or core cast to make them more hard and badass without having to actually put any serious effort into it. And if you didn't want to change anything, it just serves as a convenient way to show that the MC is still vulnerable, even if they're not.
