I figured it's time for a fun poll.

In the PC world there are a lot of connections out there. Even though there are so many, I realized that I never used all of them, because it's mainly about the devices and buying choices you make after all.

The poll is for which connections you have never used (yet), reply with what connections you rarely use and why.

Excluded are connections that everyone uses, like USB, ethernet variants and also some video/audio variants and older connections like PATA, printer ports, etcetera.

 

For me I realized I never used USB Type-C, HDMI 2.1 yet, but mainly Mini DP and optical audio. Also my former ROG motherboard had eSATA that I never got a use for.

Ports I very rarely get to use are Thunderbolt and mSATA and many older ones.

I use serial and parallel more than I should. 

Used dialup on a 56k last week.

I use IEE 1394 (FireWire) many times per week.

I use old video connections a lot for retro consoles, etc

 

I haven't used any of the new display connections, my GTX 980 isn't the newest fanciest 4K dIsPlAyPoRt gpu out there. I've only used USBC and mini DP a few times. I have lots of older PCs with eSATA but don't have any eSATA drives.

Never used any of the Apple connectors or Lightning (Well, I did plug someone else's iphone once or twice to a PC... But I hated iTunes with such a passion on Windows that I could never actually get one for myself).

I had hopes of using e-Sata one day for external drives instead of USB (before USB3.0 time), but that never ended up happening.

And never used Optical for anything for myself. I did help my brother hook up his soundbar to optical, but that's pretty much it.

Oh my god this thread just reminded me of a conversation i had in this forum with another member who was adamant that EVERY display has to have a VGA port and is useless without it. This discussion went on for pages and i couldn't bring him back to the reality that it's a dead connector in current CONSUMER hardware no matter how hard i tried and how i argued.

On that topic I miss DVI on GPUs. Used to be so ubiquitous. Everything from my GeForce 6800 to my GTX 980 uses it. I only need one monitor for my testbench where I hook up lots of different GPUs and it's DVI. Can be digital or analogue. Of course there are better solutions now but how widely used it used to be...

Just eSATA and HDMI 2.1.

I would have used eSATA because I have ports for it but I don't have any eSATA devices.

HDMI 2.1 nah because I don't have nor plan to get HDMI 2.1 devices.

I know... FireWire is awesome and I do use null model serial to transfer data between Rhapsody (Pentium III) and Jankinator (Zen 2). Yes I have a 9-pin serial port on my PC.

Yeah but this guy made the argument that modern monitors and TVs are basically not useable because they don't feature VGA anymore. And no, he wasn't just talking about usefulness for himself, but he was adamant this applies to everyone.

My first "LAN" party was me and a buddy playing Blood 1v1 via null modem. Back in Win 95 days. Boy those were the days... had no idea wtf we were doing and tried like a dozen games, including OG Doom, but only could get Blood to work.

...is he aware that for $5 you can get a DP to VGA or the other way around adapter lol...

Ah right, I missed firewire in there. I even used to use it a lot. I still need to add a firewire card to my "modern" PC to capture MiniDV tapes.

True, a lot of old ones aren't there. I could edit them and add them though.
Edit: Never mind, 20 poll options is the maximum. Unless I made a 2nd poll, but I'd rather not.

My GTX 1080 still has one, but yeah they're pretty much gone now. I used DVI for many years, including a DVI to HDMI cable, until I made the switch to full blown HDMI devices.

All of them, but I have been it the tech industry for almost 20 years.  I'm surprised esata scored high, as it was only available on high end boards, very useful though.

PS/2 ports. Used to hate that USB keyboards and mice existed when PS/2 did the job just fine, then they dumped the PS/2 ports and that was fine.

I'm starting to see them making a comeback (at least here at work on some systems we get in) and I"m confused...

I use 6.3mm all the time, as I help setup music sets

and I have a atari 2600 all the time so I use all sorts of old video conectors, i use 3 diffrent omnes for that

I could use some help with this!

Thanks for the laugh with my morning coffee, that thread was something else haha. 
 

On topic: I’ve used all of them except thunderbolt and eSATA. I don’t have a newer MacBook or a need for thunderbolt (at least not yet), and external hard drives have been connected with a USB adapter or had an enclosure with a USB port.

I've never used Displayport. Everything else I've done.

 

Oops actually I take that back. My Index uses DP. But I've never had a monitor with it. I've been using TVs as my display for the last decade.

According to the poll so far, eSATA (23 votes) is the port used least, followed by MiniDP (21 votes). It makes me think, why motherboards and cases back in the day had eSATA if nobody used them? I believe it's for connecting HDDs to your PC directly for fast transfers speeds, pretty much an external SATA port.

As for MiniDP, most of the GPUs before used to have them. Luckily they got rid of it and switched to full size DP. Connectors like the HDMI and DVI are much more useful next to the DP anyway (in my opinion)

And some of these are 100% BITD usage, but shouldn't even be a thing anymore (ps2).

I was also surprised the Firewire was not in the list, but I'm more surprised that you think PS/2 isn't a relevant port. Basically all motherboards have at least one PS/2 port on the back. I have a PS/2 keyboard and mouse hooked up to my second desktop right now, and it's not some old junker of a system from 15 years ago. The motherboard is a Z390.
