  1. I found a nice set of ATI cards that I want to buy and benchmark. But why buy 2 cards if not for Crossfire?

They need a total of 4 6-pins. I'm thinking, use 1 6-pin of each on my computer's PSU and the other on an external PSU? Or should I power one card exclusively with the external PSU and one exclusively with the PC PSU? Or is that a terrible idea either way?

I have this "psu tester" that plugs into the 24 pin connector and shorts the required 2 pins, it came with the PSU. The green light shows up on the PSU if there's power so it's got a nice little self tester - I thought i'd use that

Sounds like a good idea! However, I'm not sure if supplying power to the cards while they're off would cause any issues.

If you hook up an external PSU, I think some messy wiring (and maybe soldering) is required to connect two pins of the 24-pin connector to the motherboard, so it'll know when to supply power.

Not necessarily. You can use the old fashioned method of using a paperclip to short the necessary pin and turn on the external PSU. Just turn it off when the PC itself is off.

It's not all that messy, and you could make it at home out of the 24 pin that came with the second PSU.

That's what I used for the duration of the F@H sprint. Second PSU had the pins jumped with an inner wire from some Cat5e I had laying around.

You can run into issues if you don't turn them on at the right time though. Using the Cat5e cable, I had to turn on the second PSU at the right time or two of my GPUs just wouldn't initialize. There is some playing around with the timing to get it right too. I used powered PCIE risers, with the power coming from the system PSU to power the PCIE slot, then I'd turn on the main system and as soon as lights came on in the GPUs that were powered only by that system, I'd flip the switch on the secondary PSU. Worked 100% of the time 50% of the time.

  2. A Radeon HD 6870 engineering sample popped up on eBay for $50 and disappeared within 15 minutes.

Hmm. I have a 6870, but it's one of the most boring cards I own. I'd imagine an engineering sample would be more interesting.

It's not like they'd even care.

Well funny story, few months ago I created one, it got banned in a day for some unknown reason (I guess I ordered too many things too quickly for a new account or something?) and you need a drivers license to appeal.

In a couple years - plus you also needed proof of address (eg utility bills etc) and I don't own a house so...

  5. I prefer having physical buttons than just a screen, I can type on it without looking at it. Plus it plays Tetris and Pac-Man very nicely. The speakers aren't anything to write home about but are actually louder and clearer than the iPhone's when the screen is opened, as they are inside that bezel.

Yeah that was just for the joke. Normally I have the i5 one and the Pentium 4 one where the Dell one is now, the one on top is in the closet since I'm waiting to sell it, and the Optiplex is getting drivers installed, defragged HDD etc before being sold

Oh lol that was 100% unintentional, it's one of those things I just keep on my desk

  7. Perhaps put it in the "Experiences with non techies" thread? That's absolutely hilarious...
  8. Yeah, that RX 560 does really do it well. the 4 core, 4 thread CPU is starting to fall behind in more demanding titles though. And with the PSU... I'm guessing you use the laptop power brick, CPU pins on the PSU shorted so it supplies power to the GPU?
  9. Yes. I am saying that the flip phone is the LG. And the iPhone is my true phone, but the LG I use for keeping track of to do lists because of the good keyboard.
  10. Did something similar a few months ago but your implementation seems more thorough.
  11. Now that I'm rich /s I'm going to buy $30 of flip phones

Because that's what rich people do right

Going for an LG EnV3 in original box, a Cosmos 3 and an EnV2 because I want them all.
