What do you think apple will do if Right to Repair passes?

So with right to repair thing going on, what do you think apple is going to do if it passes?

Do you think apple is going to comply? Or do you think that apple is going to just pay a fine without actually providing the parts?

Or do you think apple is going to go as far make sure that everything possible is soldered on to make it more of a nightmare?

Whats your thoughts?

I am no expert here but I can see them doing 3-4 things:

 

 1. Hiring a team of lawyers and engineers to scour the wording of the bill to exploit each and every loophole they can find.

 2. Designing their devices to be as obtuse, through both hardware and software, to be as user unserviceable as possible while remaining within the law.

 3. Running a misinformation campaign denouncing the bill.

 4. Budgeting a massive lobbying initiative to combat the bill in government. 

 

 The worst part is that they will be far, far from alone in this endeavor.

Well, they would make less money off of it. The point of a business is to make as much money as possible as fast as possible and in most cases as nefariously as possible, and Apple being such a massive business will probably never adopt Right to Repair fully. What I'm assuming they do is assign a unique PN to each part of phones and tablets and laptops that reports back to the device and the device won't boot without a specific PN installed unless it's serviced by Apple. I believe they already do something like this but I assume it will get more serious in the future.

I don't think repairability is sustainable in a consumption led economy.

 

Benefits of mandated repairability in consumer tech will do little without a change in the consumer mind to go along with it. It may end up being little more than a convenience to some.

 

We like our toys, and we like them new.

Really I don’t want a easily repairable phone, I want something small and easy to use. Most of the right to repair movement isn’t that.

It says ISL6259 there so id guess no

 the 9240 is a restricted purchase by Apple. Your literally can’t buy them unless they’ve been pulled off a dead board or one specific battery pack

Yes

The fine is nothing.

why do you think they still use lightning when everyone else is mandated to use USB of some form? Proprietary cables were made illegal a decade ago, everything was supposed to become whatever the current generation of USB had to offer. Micro or mini usb, then that followed with usb c.

 

Apple said no, continued to use the 30 pin, and then when they were announcing a new connector everyone was like “oh nice, micro usb time” but they dropped an entirely proprietary format instead.

 

The fine means nothing to them, for the cables it added up to less than the cost of the cable per phone.

Depending on what the fine is for the right to repair law, they’ll just pay it. If it’s too much then I could maybe see some change but I doubt it.

 

I say all this as someone who exclusively buys iPhones.
