I can see this one using techniques for finding pot grow farms.  One that I could see also is electric space heaters becoming computers.  Why have an electric heater that doesn’t do computing work? There have been home appliance ASICS since 2013 during the earlier asic boom. The best one I saw was a radiator that looked like a tradition oil or steam based version but was asic powered instead. Silent, heats your home, and no one is the wiser

Didn’t know it was the air force.  I heard about it though. Wolfram cluster made of game consoles.  Wolfram clusters iirc have limitations as to what they are good for, but it might have been something the Air Force needed to do.

I really wonder, how did all the 3800 PS4s cost? Like almost $2m? Mining cryptos is hardly profitable and and PS4 is really old device, like 9 years old. Released in 2012 but we should keep in mind the console has been in development before 2012. And then like $53k in profit? Then they'll get caught before they earned their investments back.

Police in Ukraine have made a large bust of a gaming operation stealing $259,300/mo in electricity

So at the end of the day: no gpus were involved (except those that make up the ps4), there are only ps4s on those racks, and gamers steal electricity.

Is it time to demand legislators to crack down on gaming? Ban all consoles games where a bot farming can be turned into profit in the name of "muh evironment"?

So at the end of the day: no gpus were involved (except those that make up the ps4), there are only ps4s on those racks, and gamers steal electricity.

Is it time to demand legislators to crack down on gaming? Ban all consoles games where a bot farming can be turned into profit in the name of "muh evironment"?

The thing I saw said the operation was blacking out whole neighborhoods,  it needed to be stopped.  It doesn’t matter how stupid or not the purpose of their electricity theft was.  This thing probably killed a few people who fell down stairs in the dark or were dependant on electrically powered medical devices or something.  There is no “oh it’s not THAT bad” argument here

Well you theoretically CAN mint BTC without an ASIC, you just won’t make any money doing it.  This group because of their whole electricity theft thing could for all I know have been mining BTC and making money because their electricity was “free”. I get the impression from the thread they were doing something else though I’m not sure what.  Doesn’t matter.  They got taken down.

 

You are very correct though that while BTC is A cryptocoin it is by no means the only one mined.  And it behaves differently than newer coins because is suspect partially because of its comparatively primitive origins.

They use a bassically a rx480 in a ps4 pro, normal PS4 is worsebut aslong as you can get more than 4gb vram probably.
