Any serious testing of the lightest effective anti-virus software?

So I know everyone believes that Windows Defender is the lightest AV, but what little testing I've been able to find on it seems to indicate it's actually pretty heavy: 

 

 

Does anyone know of any rigorous testing of the current general most effective anti-virus software to see which one has the lowest overall performance impact? If I can gain a 5% performance bump for just switching to BitDefender, that certainly seems like something worth looking into.

The reality is that you will have some performance impact when you have any real-time protection. But as long as you have a decent system it shouldn't be noticeable.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

I find that testing hella sus, as it's in Virtualbox, therefore whatever's on the host OS will impact testing, and we have no way of knowing what's going on.

Jayztwocents , the man himself, did a test, and he got moar F P S with defender on, so. 🤷‍♀️

 

 

Also own experience, no, its not even noticable.

 And if ~125mb , ~0-1% CPU is an issue then there are more serious issues with the system probably…

I wouldn't use that as good enough evidence. The only source I would trust would be Level1Tech or GamersNexus.

Just keeping this here as a Best antivirus in the world is common sense. But imo, any antivirus with real time monitoring can and will affect your experience especially regarding frame time as the drive activity clashes between your video game and antivirus scanning in the background. But really on a decently modern system with an SSD, it should be barely noticeable in game.

Allow me to introduce you to the world of high end VR flight simulation, where a 3090 gets you 40fps 99% lows and that's really good...

Potato game is at fault here. 

 

If you want to make defender less taxing:

1- go to Windows Security->Virus & Threat protection->Virus & Threat protection settings-> disable "Tamper Protection"

2- open gpedit.msc->computer configuration->administrative templates->windows components->Microsoft defender antivirus->real-time protection->enable "turn off real-time protection" 

 

Not really recommended, but I do it anyway while programming, as this destroys the filesystem performance for small files.

Any real time scanning of drives or processes will be heavier on PC than just passive. Most of the free versions don't have active protection to everything, just links and files. Defender has active scanning by default. So in order to do actual testing, same options/settings would need to be used.

 

My experience is limited to few software over the 15 years of use. I have used very little of Defender during that time, and always with PCs that are considered regular in performance. So in that sense, I can only say that Norton, F-Secure and Avast are heavy. The rest aren't.

You know, people keep saying that about high fidelity flights sims. DCS is potato game. Il-2 Great Battles is potato game. MSFS2020 is potato game. X-Plane 11 is potato game. 

 

Do you know of a single actual high fidelity flight simulator that does not eat CPU and GPU cycles like candy?

Nope, but even then, there are differences in optimization, fidelity and eye-candy. MSFS2020 should be less potato than DCS in that regard.

Yeah, no, 2020's worse: 

 

Yes, he is trying to lock in minimums at 30 fps. Which for a non-combat flight sim is actually fine. But it's not better.

Oh, I didn't notice it was VR. Too bad SLI died, or it could render each eye separately (I guess it still can with Dx12, but the programmer needs to do that).

Oo, so tested Norton, Windows Defender, But Defender and Kaspersky, both active and inactive, using the Il-2 SYN_Vander Benchmark v6, CPU test config and found all four perform within 1% of each other. 

 

Ironically, Norton 360 was the fastest, but given the spread, that could easily be in the noise.
