Apple today previewed a long list of new accessibility features coming soon, including AssistiveTouch for the Apple Watch, which will allow users to control an Apple Watch without ever having to touch the display or controls.

Apple says AssistiveTouch for the Apple Watch will be available with a software update. The feature will likely be part of watchOS 8, which is expected to be unveiled alongside iOS 15, macOS 12, and tvOS 15 at WWDC 2021 next month.

 

My thoughts

I think this is the future. Having to touch your devices less is a welcoming feature to have.

Now if only they would do that for phones so when you get a spam or telemarketer call, just flip 'em off to ignore the call or even hangup on them.

Samsung had gestures and eye tracking in their phones years ago and no one used it. Google put a radar sensor with exactly 2 gestures in the Pixel 4 and then quietly dropped it the next year.

 

Notice that Apple is promoting this as an accessibility feature. Nobody else is going to use it.

I would love a gesture to bring up Apple Pay instead of having to press the button 2x. Maybe also add custom gestures for some of the programs on the watch.

Payment requires foolproof user confirmation for obvious reasons.

 

As impressive as this might look in a demo video I doubt it is 100% accurate.

Can't see myself using this really. It's cool but yeah... maybe if I couldn't use my right arm due to a disability?

This would be great for when wearing work gloves like I always do and I don't wanna touch my Apple Watch.

At first I thought it was going to be janky but seeing the motion pointer it looks to be super accurate. If I can double squeeze to skip a song I am so down as airpod pros are a pain in the ass to use since they removed the non capacitive tap functionality

This is totally an open tech demo for the tech that will be used behind the Apple Glasses project. They're probably gonna get this as precise as possible, then announce that you can use your Apple Watch to control Apple Glasses. It would be like Apple to force you to wear another product to use the Apple Glasses.

 

Remember, Dark Mode and Cursor Support on iOS both started out as "Accessibility Features"...
