iOS Dims Down Screen When Playing For Long Periods Of Time (overheating issue???)

I have noticed that when playing for extended periods of time on my iPhone 11 running iOS 14.5 my screen dims automatically. Turning off auto brightness or manually trying to raise screen brightness does nothing. Screen keeps being dim.

I have read that possible issue is due to overheating or something else. Does anyone know why this is happening and can this be turned off?

Phone is warm to the touch, but i don’t think its overheating. Maybe it is, but that is a very strange way to deal with overheating silicone by dimming screen instead of lowering frequency and controlling power delivery to your SOC.

 

Any ideas on this issue?

Probably your battery is failing, cannot maintain enough voltage in long duration. Just a guess.

My iphone 8 did that once when the phone was really hot. If it gets too hot, it will prompt a warning on the screen.

no warning showed. Phone is warm, but not superhot. my iPhone 6 used to be much hotter.

Probably... But iPhone 11 does not have oled... it has LCD, just like Xr does.

It's literally just the screen dimming to help keep the SoC temps under control. In most phones (iPhones are like this for sure) the SoC is facing the display, and believe it or not said display can put out a fair bit of heat into the phone. On my iPhone 7, I could feel the chassis of the phone start to get warm if I had the screen cranked up for extended periods of time.

 

Not really anything you can do about it.

It's really bad thermal design by apple then. Can't point out any other manufacturer that deals with overeating this way. It would be way better if they throttled down SoC instead of messing with screen brightness. Besides, does this really helps that much with overheating issue? My iPhone does not run that hot after all. Thanks for the reply.

There are numerous factors at play here.

 

It’s pretty well known that Apple aggressively pursues performance on their SoC designs. As efficient as they are under low and moderate loads, they can also suck down a lot of juice at full tilt. Their SoCs can get quite hot under an extended load. Most likely, they do throttle down, albeit, as little as possible to stabilize device heat. 
 

Glass isn’t especially effective at heat dissipation. Things are substantially worse when in a phone case as well. Most cases are  made of insulating materials that contain heat, preventing the device from dissipating it. 
 

Fast charging your iPhone also puts a lot of heat into it. 
 

Ambient temperature has a pretty big impact as well. My phones run way hotter in California Summers than during Winter. I often run the Power Saving mode specifically for this when using my phone in a hot area.

It's just thermal management to try and keep the device cooler. The warning sign only shows when it's too hot to operate and needs to cool down. I personally would rather take a slightly dimmer display than a laggy UI that's unusable. Also it's not just an Apple thing. You said playing games for extended amounts of time. Almost every smartphone not made for gaming will struggle with this. It's just not a typical workload it's designed for.
