A cheap $14 "750W" PSU. I didn't know at the time that those cheap PSUs aren't regulated and fried my motherboard. It happened in 2014

Make sure to quote me @Meowster  so that I see your reply

I love my job, being a sysadmin. It's very fun

I used it out of necessity for 3 years, it did the job but I wish I didn’t have to buy it. I didn’t hate it but didn’t love it either. I didn’t game often enough at the time to get used to it, going back to a keyboard felt natural. If I had used it every other day I would have been fine but I didn’t.

It always felt just a little bit off...

Yes, my motherboard and a GTX 970. I didn't know they could do so much damage. Now I pretty much avoid anything that isnt 80 plus

I would find they overheat fairly quickly, and then shut down, requiring them to be pulled out of the USB port, cooled off, and try again.

Rinse.

Repeat.

Regret?  All of my PC components that I dont actually need.  I have more PC's, and components than people available to man them.

BUT - that regret only sets in after I have done everything I wanted to with my shiny new toy, because Im like....now what to do? lol

And since I dont sell hardware...I then regret buying something I dont "NEED".

BUT, it always provides me with a good time, so the regret is only realized after boredom sinks in 😉

Ebay from China I bought 10 USB 2.0 wifi adapters (just needed them in case I was working on something that didnt have cable available to reach, etc) - now granted I knew they were bottom barrel, but muh gods.  They are only JUST useful enough (and not worth the cost to look at returning) to have in the tool box in case I need an extra USB wifi stick in a pinch.  I paid like $2 each or less lol.  The disconnects are terrible at best.

Believe it or not, I've bought maybe 6 tech things, and they all worked fine.

But the worst thing I've ever had to use were external SD card readers.

I have one. It's a little white-and-pink cube. I stole it from Target when I was 5 (found it on the floor, put it in my pocket to put back, forgot about).

And it SUCKS.

It only sometimes works, and when it does, there's a specific sequence you have to use with it.

1. Insert the Mini-USB cable into the adapter

2. Insert the SD card into the slot

3. Connect the other end of the Mini-USB to USB cable into a USB port that must NOT be USB 3.0

4. Remove the SD card and Mini-USB cable from the adapter

5. Insert the SD card

6. Insert the Mini-USB cable

And then it works.

Thankfully I don't need it anymore.

My Corsair H110i GTX. Nothing's really wrong with it, but it was just so... underwhelming? It's loud because the fans have to ramp up a lot because it struggles to keep my 6700K cool under load.

The FPS, they just overtake me in the grass like a GP2. GP2 GPU, GP2. AHHHHH!

Samsung g7

Curved VA🤮

Refresh rate was nice but overall image quality and color was ugly.

It looked good until I sat it next to my OG LG 34" ultrawide 3440x1440 IPS panel. Sure its only 60hz compared to the 240 on the G7. I don't notice a difference at all.

Took it back to microcenter.

Some "high-end" Antec PSU I bought in 2015. Right after I started building PCs again by putting a gaming unit together for myself. I should have known $47 for 750W was a dumpster fire waiting to happen, even if the PSU did have a blue illuminated ring inside of it that looked cool, but I forgot the rule of PSUs: higher wattage + lower price = boom.

There was no boom, but after a couple of weeks, there was a rapid power-cycling when I tried to turn the PC on, and when I was able to get the PC up and running again, one of the PCIe slots was f**ked, any attempt to change the fan curve in Windows froze the system, any attempt to turn on wifi froze the system, and BIOS would instantly freeze if I went into it. I exchanged that unit for a different Antec, then bought the Corsair RM650i I use today.

And that other Antec unit? I plugged it into the HP Elite HPe-170f that I was passing on to my then-wife so I could upgrade the GPU and RAM for her. That, for the record, was the best PC I have ever owned. I say "was" because the new Antec unit did the exact same thing, the motherboard was never stable again, and I ended up pulling the CPU, CPU cooler, hard drive and a piece of the case bezel off as mementos of the best PC I'd ever owned, then unceremoniously disposed of the rest of it.

I have never bought an Antec product again, and I never will, because that company is a piece of

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.
