Are there any ‘new’ power supplies?

All of the power supplies I’m finding seem to have released in 2019 or earlier.  Are there any new models to speak of?

The 2019 may just be the design reference year.  They're still manufacturing units daily.

Not a lot has changed in two years.  What kind of features would you expect to find in a PSU designed in 2021 that wouldn't be in a PSU designed in 2019?

I don’t know.  I generally just prefer to get the latest and/or best model of anything I buy.  It seems difficult to figure out what the latest model of PSU is for many brands.  EVGA, for example, has their G1, G+, G2, G1+, G5, etc. and it gets confusing.

 

Of course, this probably doesn’t matter anyway, because it seems like all the best PSUs are sold out.  The Corsair AX1000 seems acceptable, but appears to be out of stock everywhere.

If you want good PSUs, you should ask for good PSUs, not new ones. Not sure why you'd want the AX1000, as it's neither.

Again, instead of being obsessed with getting the newest model out there, why not get whatever is the actually best option, irrespective of when it was launched...? If you just want the newest PSUs, you could start by taking a look at all the 80+ certifications, and sort by newest.

Thanks.  I’ll take a look at that.

 

Is there any particular reason why you say the AX1000 is not good?  It seems to be very highly reviewed, which I know is not the be all end all. I’m sure some people have gotten some bad units, but I’d imagine that happens with virtually every electronics product.

 

Lastly, is there a particular PSU, or list of a few, you’d recommend for a 3090 FTW3 and a 5900x (or 11900k if I’m able to get it)?

They're higher-end units are pretty good...of course those are based on SeaSonic / SuperFlower designs, etc.

Their lower tier units....not so much, very much the opposite.

 

You can't just go by brand.

Even EVGA, Antec, SeaSonic, and Corsair has shitty bottom-of-the-barrel PSUs.

Ignore customer rEvIeWs. They are just random users misleading others, in order to justify their own, unresearched purchase.

Even within Corsair's own lineup, it has the worst fan of any unit, from the RMx and up, having to spin faster and generate more noise. It's the only one above the RMi that lacks multi rail OCP. And as it's based on the Seasonic Prime, do not be surprised if it has issues with transients from the 3090. Seasonic being the OEM, it may also have worse QC, due to Seasonic outsourcing the PCBA.

Where are you buying from? The availability and pricing will vary, so we can't give any meaningful recommendations without knowing.

I’m probably buying from any reputable retailer that has the unit I select at or near MSRP.  I try to buy from Amazon if possible because I like their return policy, though I detest their shipping practices.

 

So is it potentially a bad idea to pair a Seasonic PSU with the 3090?

You need to step back and re-read what was written to you.   They specifically said that buying based on brand is a bad idea, you cannot generalize like that.

You also can't just look at the efficiency rating.

80 PLUS / Bronze / Silver / Gold / Platinum / Titanium is POWER EFFICIENCY rate, NOT quality rating.

You could have a PSU that is 80 PLUS Gold rated, but is inferior to a 80 PLUS Bronze unit, or another 80 PLUS Gold PSU.

 

PSU Tier lists / charts can lead you in the right direction, but STILL do your research, and look / read the in-depth reviews.

 

It's like buying a car.

Just because it's a $100,000 LandRover, and 600HP doesn't mean it's good quality.

LandRover for MANY YEARS in a row, is the BOTTOM OF THE LIST in reliability / problem-free.

I fully understand that.  But what if a particular brand doesn’t pair well with another component?  I’m just trying to see if I should avoid Seasonic altogether because it will cause issues with my GPU.
